Article by Byron Richards, CCN

Quote from article, "Scientists have now proven that a lack of vitamin D helps damaged cholesterol (oxidized cholesterol) form plaque and that adequate vitamin D stops damaged cholesterol from forming plaque."

Statin Associated Myopathy & Skeletal Muscle Damage

CMAJ ? July 7, 2009; 181 (1-2). doi:10.1503/cmaj.081785

http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/181/1-2/E11

Quote from article, "Interpretation: Persistent myopathy in patients taking statins reflects structural muscle damage. A lack of elevated levels of circulating creatine phosphokinase does not rule out structural muscle injury."

Note: Statin muscle damage occurring with normal CK/CPK (creatine phosphokinase) levels has been known for quite some time, but just being published now in peer reviewed journals.

Re: What do you do when you have professional doctors brushing you off and refusing to read about this? (referring to statin side effects)

~ see page PRINT Articles
~ If your doctor refuses to acknowledge your statin side effect complaints, it's time to look for a new doctor. There is so much evidence out there that statins not only cause discomfort, but actual muscle damage (some permanent) and memory loss/personality changes (can also be permanent).

Introduction to "Statins 101"

My aim in creating this website is not to discredit the medical community or slam the drug companies, but only to bring awareness to anyone that is contemplating taking a statin drug, is currently taking a statin drug or used to take a statin and is now suffering adverse effects (AE's) from this class of very potent cholesterol lowering drugs. Even the non-statins like Zetia are causing similar (statin like) AE's.

The sad truth is that statins are not well tolerated (as the drug companies claim). I personally know at least 400 people that are experiencing adverse effects, many AE's are permanent or have not reverted to pre-statin treatment. Just stopping the drug does not ensure that the pain will subside or cognitive decline will be restored.

In almost all situations patients are not informed about the numerous AE's statins can cause. Everyone is familiar with muscle pain, but prescribing physicians seem to be unaware that muscle pain is but one of numerous AE's. When we suspected (long term use of) Lipitor was causing my husband's memory loss, we were told, "Statins don't do that."

These adverse effects are not listed in the DPI -Drug Package Insert (Patient or Physicians), but make no mistake, statins do cause the following:
* Memory Loss
* Amnesia (including TGA - transient global amnesia)
* (Peripheral) Neuropathy
* Depression

There are very few people that actually benefit from statins, however there is increasing pressure for almost everyone that walks into the doctor's office to be tested for and if cholesterol levels are elevated, treated with any of the statins or non statins.

The collection of materials on this website are for those who are searching for (the deeply buried) information about statins, so that you can make an informed decision.
