Imagevortex started accepting image
submissions in May 2005, and live sales started in August 2005. It is based in Bradenton, US and London, UK and they have chosen jurisdiction of
New York, USA for their legal documents, partly due to clear and
concise statements provided in US legislation regarding digital content -
in particular, the website is fully compliant with DMCA. There were 22,000 images online by 01.04.2006. About 500
images are added per week, unless there is a big batch coming - they have some
photography agencies working with them, and these are often sending batches of
over 2,000 images at once. The acceptance criterias
are rather strict, and only the best images get accepted. An average image takes 2-3 days to be
reviewed - after the successful review it appears online immediately. Imagevortex pays 70% commission per download (photographers set their own prices ranging from $ (10) $20-$300) = minimum pay/ download 7$. Photographers can
request payouts via PayPal, check or wire transfer as soon as the accumulated
total to be paid is equal to or over US$100. Imagevortex operates on a per photo
payment basis - photo prices are set by photographers themselves within
$20-$300 range, optionally allowing 2 smaller resizes to be sold for a
fraction of the original price. They introduced this feature to build a stock
imagery marketplace where photographers can compete not only in quality, but
in pricing as well - that provides the customers with a wide choice of images
according to their requests and budgets. According to the
above limits, minimum price is $10 (for a smallest resize of an image priced
at $20), up to $300 for a full high resolution size of an image priced at
$300 by the contributing photographer. The collection includes all subjects - as for
the style, they prefer commercial stock photography to others, but gladly
accept most images that may be potentially interesting to customers. Statement from ImageVortex: "A
high class royalty free stock photography collection aimed to compete with
rights managed collections" Currently the site is available in english language only, and they are test-driving a beta version of german language image search. If this
proves successful, they will continue to offer searching possibilities on
more languages. They are also looking into
extending the submitter services to include photo retouch and digital
processing covered by an additional agreement. They do not have a forum yet, but plan to
add it in future. Minimum image requirements are 1600x1200 px JPEGs, preferably
in sRGB color space. No entry testing for first time submitters. There is a current limit of 7
Mb per image, and maximum upload size in pixels is limited on 50 megapixels
(to account for high resolution film scans and panoramic shots). But they are
looking into relaxing the prior limitation in the next version of the processing software. There is no time limit for the images to stay online. Over 2,500 photographers are registered with Imagevortex to
date. The number of registered buyers was not disclosed. Model release is requiered, but photographers do not need to upload
releases along with images - when a customer requests a release for an image,
we forward the release request directly to the photographer, and he/she then
faxes it directly to the customer. Imagevortex strives to stand out by
offering high quality imagery that is easy to find - in particular, keeping
image keywording in house instead of giving it out to photographers was a
part of the ongoing initiative to keep search results relevant and really
answering customers needs. They believe that keeping the purity and quaity of
their royalty-free stock collection is a vital part of their mission, and they will continue to hand pick only the very best in stock imagery to help their loyal customers fulfil their business and personal needs without having
to consider additional expenses for rights-managed images.
