A Tour Around the Outside of the Church
I've had a couple of nice emails from the US requesting pictures of the outside of the church. I'm always happy to oblige!
Walking up the bottom of Westgate Street, the steeple dominates. Because it was unsafe the top of it was removed.

A view at street level.

Looking along we see the historic Dick Wittington pub next door.

A view of the church from opposite the Dick Wittington.

Walking down into the pub garden we see that the main stained glass window has been shadowed by the Dick Whittington for a very very long time. It is amazing how often major stained glass windows were allowed to be shadowed by adjacent buildings in this careless way, when at the time they were constructed most ordinary folk couldn't afford glass of any sort.

A little view of the rear side of the church over the garden wall.

Back round to the front.

Just to the right of the main door - a little door to the crypt?

The ornate but very ancient carving above the main door

The back door into what's left of the graveyard. The Tudor Folk museum can be seen across the road in the background. Also well worth a visit!

From the back the very low walls and enormous slate roof make this church look like a medieval banqueting hall.

The proximity of St Nicholas to Gloucester Cathedral is apparent in this view of the Cathedral tower.

I also believe I know where the rest of the steeple is. Gloucester seems to be littered with bits of St Nicholas (maybe littered is the wrong word?) Watch this space.
Back to the Beginning.
