The Belfry

Through a little wooden door and carefully up a very tight spiral stone staircase. The treads are worn and uneven and the centre column is worn glass smooth from the touch of thousands of hands. I hold my tripod in front of me to catch the spiderwebs before they wrap around my face. (Learnt that trick pretty quickly!) Then, through a tiny little door, into the belfry.

Oh dear, look at the state of the clock mechanism. I bet there's someone out there just itching to restore it!

Let's take a closer look.

That person isn't me! Shame to see it like that though. I wonder when it last worked?

So what's this? It looks like the heart of a rather large musical box. For automatic bell ringing, linked to the clock maybe?

You can probably see this in more detail than you knew you wanted. Oh well...

It's pretty difficult to move around in here because there are low horizontal beams which you have to climb over. Somehow the tripod legs snag up with everything!

Let's point the camera upwards and see the inside of the tower.

Does this woodwork really date back to the 15th Century? Or has it been restored?

Remarkably clean - just a few spider webs.

Time to explore higher. But first, a photo of that quaint little door. I had to remove the white notice at the left side of the door, and also the light switch and cabling because they would have spoilt the picture. 'That's why I was up here so long!'

But it's OK. I put them back again!

The camera never lies!

Let's find The Bells!
