 Ministry Team Members at

St. Hilda's & St. Lawrence's

This list is by no means a comprehensive who's who of people who do vital work in the Church - rather it is a short introduction to some of the people who are in the 'up front' roles within the Church.

Parish Priest  : the Rev'd Tim Jones

Tim is parish priest for both St Hilda's and St Lawrence's on Lawrence Street. He is married to George; they have two daughters. Tim has recently been the Vicar of St Paul's Church in Corinth, Mississippi, in the USA, returning to England in November 2007.  Tim had previously served in the Diocese of York as parish priest for the rural parishes of Welbury, East Rounton, and West Rounton as well as serving for a time as the Bishop of Whitby's Officer for young adults and vocations and as chaplain at a prison for young men.

His interests include all kinds of history, as well as international justice and fair trade issues. Tim can also be seen walking his dogs and heard singing badly to his music which he plays too loud!  He is now in his forties, but isn't coping too badly!

Curate : Rev'd Michael Fairey

Assistant Priest : the Rev'd Paul Wordsworth

Paul is married to Olive (see below!), and has much experience of growing churches, having recently retired as Archbishop's Officer for Mission and Evangelism - he still travels extensively supporting and advising churches. He is also deeply involved in the Church's work with the homeless street community in York, and campaigns on poverty issues. He plays the guitar, and used to be a rugby player.

Reader :  Olive Wordsworth

Olive is the key worship leader for our 11am services, and runs the 2gether 2worship service each month. She has been a teacher, and is a regular visitor to lead worship in Derwent School. She was one of the first women licensed in 1972 as a Diocesan Reader (and one of the youngest in the UK) to train for Readership ministry when the Church of England gave women authority to preach and lead worship. Olive produces the monthly newsletter.

Lay worship leader :  Ralph Tate

Ralph is our organist, and helps with preaching and leading worship. He used a secondary school teacher, but is now qualified and working as a counsellor and therapist - amongst many other things. He has a particular ministry with the bereaved. Ralph's love of the Organ came from playing the Organ in his schooldays and he has played in a variety of churches across the country including Newcastle, Durham, Bournemouth and Christchurch and not least in York. Ralph is also a fellow of the Victoria College of Music and the Royal Society of Art.

Churchwardens :  Betty Sheppeard and Jean Smith

Betty and Jean have served faithfully as churchwardens for a number of years at St Hilda's church, and serve in a number of areas in church life as well on the Ministry Team. The role of a churchwarden is to be the Bishop's officer in the parish.

Additional Support

Within the ministry of St Hilda's, there are a number of other people who support the preaching ministry of St Hilda's including Jack Booth, Reader at Osbaldwick and Kingsley Boulton, Reader at St Olaves' Church, Marygate.

We are deeply grateful for the time which they give to help us.
