Stephanie's Transition Journey

My name is Stephanie Elizabeth Anne Butterfield, I was born in 1963 with a birth defect. My brain was wired all wrong when compared to my body. I have a female brain, but physically I developed as a male. This caused me all sorts of difficulties as a child, both mentally and emotionally.

I struggled with my gender identity issues all my life. Soon after my father died in 2002, I took the opportunity to re-visit my gender identity feelings. By now I knew I was transsexual, and I contacted a gender psychiatrist in London and asked for a consultation. He said he thought I was transsexual but that I needed to go away and sort out my bereavement and depression issues by getting some counselling.

This I did, and went again with my gender identity issues in August 2005, I saw my GP and asked to be referred for Gender Dysphoria. I was seen by my Gender Psychiatrist in January 2007, was diagnosed and referred for hormone intervention therapy.

I received my first opinion for surgery in February 2008, and that is where my life is now, awaiting my all important second opinion.
