To Music
To Music is a sad comedy about Derek, middle-aged and lonely. His main social contact is with his younger friend Roger, (who appears here as a series of messages on Derek's answerphone.) Together, to hide their loneliness, they joke about women, posh people, their gay vicar and anyone who isn't them. Derek's potential saving grace is an incongruous love of the songs of Schubert. A church concert provides Derek with the opportunity to get close to Sylvia, a sophisticated and educated woman who has agreed to accompany him on the piano. Derek inevitably misconstrues the artistic closeness which grows between them as they rehearse the Schubert song 'An die Musik'. ('To Music') and after the concert, in which he shines, makes a disasterous pass at the horrified Sylvia. The play ends with Derek listening first to Roger's latest puerile and suggestive answerphone message, and then to the beautiful Schubert accompaniment as he stares round his, once again, empty flat. 1m (singer), 1f (pianist), 1m {voice only}.
