:: In the Centre

English classes are run in both Hospitality and General English. The Hospitality course is aimed particularly at those working, or wanting to work, within the Hospitality industry, particularly hotels, resorts and restaurants, and looks to develop language skills particularly related to these areas. General English is for those who want to improve the English that they can use in everyday life and has attracted students from such diverse professions as Navy Officers, Market Stall Holders, Medical Educators and Government Officials, alongside those currently seeking work. The General English has been divided into 4 different levels: Absolute Beginners, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced in order to cater for the wide range of abilities amongst the students who attend.

The people on these courses have been hugely impacted by the Tsunami, losing family, friends, homes and businesses. The courses aim to be a place where people can come and look to the future through learning new skills and making new friends. The current timetable is as follows:

:: Out in the Community

Step Ahead also provides training to those in the community unable to attend courses at the centre due to time, transport or work constraints. To this end, Step Ahead has run Satellite short courses in Gok Nok and Pruteow and provided training for the staff at Duang Prateep orphanage, alongside teaching in a local school and a couple of local hotels.

:: German Course

October saw the first ever German course to be run at Step Ahead. Ran as an intensive course students studied twice a day two times a week for the 5 week duration and learnt Hospitality specific German in order to help them welcome the many German speaking tourists who have traditionally visited this area. We are very grateful to Matthias for enabling us to offer this course, which had previously been much requested by our students, and hope to offer it again in the near future.

:: Computer Courses

Step Ahead has run a number of beginner’s computer courses for people in the local area in order to help them develop in these skills. For the majority of the students who have attended these courses it has been the first time that they have learnt how to use a computer. The course covers the use of Word and Excel and includes projects such as the production of business cards and leaflets.

:: Children's Work

Step Ahead has undertaken a variety of work with children as well as with adults. This has involved the running of a Saturday afternoon English club at Gok Nok Village, teaching English at a local school and running the English programme for two children’s camps, the most recent of which being in April when 300 children descended upon Tablamu school for a week long holiday camp organised by ECB church. Saturday morning children’s classes have also been offered at the centre.

:: Italian Cooking Course

A week long Italian cooking course, led by a team of 5 Italians, was held in August. This course covered all aspects of Italian cooking, from what ingredients are used to the table arrangement and the cooking methods used. Students on the course learnt how to make a range of Italian food, including pizza, spaghetti and tiramisu.
