In 2002 the entire machinery was replaced.
A 'new' engine was installed along with a larger boiler.
The engine is two crank compound built by Cochrane and Co - Engineers of Birkenhead. The exact date is a little uncertain but we know that the Cochrane Birkenhead factory burnt down in 1902 and the company re-located to Annan in Scotland (where they still exist and continue to build industrial boilers). The engine therefore pre-dates the move and from the style it is estimated that it dates from somewhere between 1885 and 1900 with the best guess as 1895.
