Sailing Tales By Glenice

From Crotone to Brindisi

18th June, 2005 Crotone to Brindisi

From Crotone we planned to do a 2 day sail to Dubrovnic in Croatia.  It all started well with a beautiful 8 to 9 knot sail for 6 hours.  However, true to the weather in the Med. the breeze dropped right off and we had to motor sail.

While we were enjoying one of Idas delicious Spaghetti Bols. on deck we heard another Securite!Securite! Attention all Sailors!  There was a submerged vessel hazzard somewhere between us and Brindisi and the position of the coordinates were right on our course.  Keen watch had to be kept for the rest of the night while huge cruise ships and tankers passed us by.  During the night the wind built up again right on our nose making things pretty rock and rolly.  We had a crew meeting on deck and decided  that we would make for Brindisi instead of trying to push on to Dubrovnic as we would be arriving in a very tricky port at night and this was very unadvisable according to the pilot book.

19th June, 2005 Safe Arrival in Brindisi

A very busy port with ferries from Greece, Turkey, Albania and Croatia arrive here regularly day and night.  We followed the course to the brand new Porto di Touristico Brindisi and felt much better after a big tuck in of scrambled eggs, toast and coffee.  We will stay here until it is safe and comfortable to cross to Croatia.  In the mean time we are going to hire a car and do some touring around the very interesting and historical countryside inland.
