Ongoing Club Projects Include:
Each holiday season, we adopt a family in need and provide gifts. Usually, we try and find a single mother with children. In 2012 we participated in Ladies of Liberty and adopted 3 service women who are stationed overseas and sent them holiday care packages.
Canceled stamps are collected and donated to the state federation. The state federation collects them from all the clubs in the state and then sells them to a collector. The money earned from this sale is donated to the State President's Special Project. This administration, that project is Soldier's Angels (http://www.soldiersangels.org/). Stamps need to be cut (not torn) from the envelopes, leaving a slight border around the stamp. Damaged stamps, and those with red envelopes, are not acceptable.
Columbine Memorial Clean-Up
Members volunteer to help with clean-up and maintenance of the Columbine Memorial at Clement Park in Littleton, CO.
At least one food drive is held each year to collect food for the needy. Usually held the Saturday before Easter, the food drives collects food for The Action Center.
Habitat for Humanity
SRWC typically joins a women only build sometime in the fall or spring to help build a home for someone in the Denver metro area community.
Shot @ Life
In 2012 and 2013 SRWC is collecting donations for Shot @ Life (http://shotatlife.org/) an organization run through the UN that provides 4 critical immunizations for children around the world to give them a "Shot at Life".
SRWC collects a number of used items to recycle including: Aluminum Pop Tops benefiting Ronald McDonald Charities, Greeting Card Fronts (without writing) for Boys & Girls Clubs, Cancelled stamps (see above for more details), Used cell phones for domestic violence victims (see below for more details), printer cartridges, old, broken/unwanted watches and time pieces for the American Mural representing America's Workers, current or expired manufacturers coupons for Troopons (military families), and Children's Halloween Costumes.
The (formerly Jeffco) Action Center
Each month the club collects items to donate to The Action Center, typically items for the organizations food bank. Individual size toiletries and other personal items are also collected on a year round basis. TAC provides the items to persons need. For more information on The Action Center - visit their Facebook Fan page - click here.
SRWC collects tampons and feminine hygeine products each spring for our annual Tampon Party. Items are then packaged into three day supplies and donated to The Action Center for women in need.
Used Cell Phones
Used cell phones, batteries and accessories are collected and then given to the Call To Protect program. Call To Protect will use the modern, working phones and program them to dial only 911 and a local shelter. These phones are then given to victims of domestic violence. This way they can have help at the push of a button. Phones that are not usable are sold and the money collected is used to purchase new phones.
Walk/Runs for Charity
Every year SRWC puts together teams to participate in a number of walk/runs for various Colorado charities including: Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk in September, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in October, Jingle Bell Run for the Arthritis Foundation in December, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Rocky Mountains in June, and Cancer League of Colorado's Race for Research in August.
Women's Bean Project Bean Party
Each year in the fall we throw a Bean Party to support the Women's Bean Project - an organization that has employed women who come from backgrounds of chronic unemployment and poverty and helped them develop the work and interpersonal skills needed to function independently in the workplace and community. You can be part of this worthwhile and feel good organization by joining us at the Bean Party where you will mingle among friends, sample WBP's delicious products and discover a wide assortment of gift options.
