Today (March 17) is the 86th birth anniversary of Bangladesh’s founding leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On this day in 1920, Sheikh Mujib was born in remote Tungipara village of Gopalganj district. Awami League and its front organisations have drawn up elaborate programmes to celebrate the birthday of Bangabandhu. On the eve of the occasion, Awami League president and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina has urged the people to forge greater unity by taking inspiration from the undaunted courage of the great leader for fighting against injustice, repression and exploitation. "Bangladesh emerged as an independent sovereign nation due to Bangabandhu’s lifelong struggle, courage and farsighted leadership," she said. "He has become the father of the nation for his profound political acumen, dedication and deep affection for the people."
