To the Lord, the Son of Vasudeva
The Destroyer of Kans and Chanur
To Supreme Bliss of Devaki
To Krsna the Teacher of the Universe - My Salutations!
Sri Bhagavan uvaca:
idam tu te guhyatamam pravaksyamy anasuyave
jnanam vijnanasahitam yaj jnatva moksyase subhat
The Blessed Lord said:
To You, who does not find fault, I shall declare this mystery, combined with knowledge by knowing which you shall be freed from evil
rajavidya rajaguhyam pavitram idam uttamam
pratyaksavagamam dharmyam susukham kartum avyayam
The sovereign science, sovereign secret, supreme purifier, directly realizable according to righteousness, easy to practise and imperishable
asraddadhanah purusa dharmasya 'sya paramptapa
aprapya mam nivartante mrtyusamsarvartmani
O Paramtapa (Arjuna), people devoid of faith in this Dharma (way), do not attain Me, but return to the path of the mortal world
maya tatam idam sarvam jagad avyaktamurtina
matsthani sarvabhutani na ca 'ham tesv avasthitah
All this is permeated by Me in My unmanifested aspect (as ice by water), and, all beings exist in Me. Therefore, really speaking, I am not in them
na ca matsthani bhutani pasya me yogam aisvaram
bhutabhrn na ca bhutas ho mama 'tma bhutabhavanah
Nay, those beings exist not in Me; but look at the wonderful power of My divine yoga, though the sustainer and creator of beings, Myself, in reality dwells not in those beings
ya ha 'kasasthito nityam vayuh sarvatrago mahan
atha sarvani bhutani matsthani 'ty upadharaya
As the mighty air, moving everywhere ever remains in ether, even so, know that all beings abide in Me
sarvabhutani kaunteya prakrtim yanti mamikam
kalpaksaye punas tani kalpadau visrjamy aham
O son of Kunti (Arjuna), at the end of every kalpa (time cycle), all beings enter My Prakriti (the Prime Cause) and at the beginning of every kalpa, I bring them forth again
prakrtim svam avastabhya visrjami punah-punah
bhutagramam imam krtsnam avasam prakrter vasat
Taking hold of My nature, I bring forth again and again, all this multitude of beings (according ot their respective karma) who are subject to the influence of nature (Prakrti)
na ca mam tam karmani nibadhananti dhanamjaya
udasinavad asinam asaktam tesu karmasu
O Dhanamjaya (Arjuna), nor do these actions bind Me, for I am seated as if unattached, and indifferent in those actions
maya 'dhayaksena prakrtih suyate sacaracaram
hetuna 'nena kaunteya jagad viparivartate
Under my guidance, nature (Prakrti) gives birth to the whole creation, moving and unmoving and by this means O Kunti (Arjuna), the world revolves
avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam
param bhavam ajananto mama bhutamahesvaram
Fools disregard Me as garbed in human form, not knowing my supreme nature, the great Lord of all beings
moghasa moghakarmano moghajnana vicetasah
raksasim asur im cai 'va prakrtim mohinim sritah
The senseless persons of vain hopes, vain actions, vain knowledge partake the deceptive nature of the fiendish and the demoniac, devoid of discriminaiton
mahatmanas tu mam partha davim prakrtim asritah
bhajanty ananyamanaso jnatva bhutadim avyayam
The great souled, O Partha (Arjuna), who possess a divine nature, knowing Me as the prime cause of creation and imperishable, worship Me constantly with undivided mind
satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdhavratah
namasyantas ca mam bhaktya nityayukta upasate
Always singing My glories, striving to attain Me, prostrating before Me with firm vows, ever united with Me, worship Me, always single minded
jnanayajnena ca 'py anye yajanto mam upasate
ekatvena prthaktvena bahudha visvatomukham
Others offer worship of sacrifice of wisdom in oneness of self in all, yet others worship Me as distinct (by performance of knowledge-yajna in unity-oneness of self in all), , and yet others worship Me as the Vishwaroop, the manifold facing all directions
aham kratur aham yajnah svadha 'ham aham ausadham
mantro 'ham aham eva 'jyam aham agnir aham hutam
I am Kratu, I am Yajna. I am Svadha, I am Ausadham, I am Mantra, I am Ajyam, I am Agni, I am Hutam
[Kratu--vedic ritual, Yajna--sacrifice, Svadha--offering, Ausadham--medicinal herb, Mantra--sacred syllable, Ajyam--ghee, clarified butter, Agni--fire, Hutam--burnt offering)
pita 'ham asya jagato mata dhata pitamahah
vedyam pavitram aumkara rk sama yajur eva ca
I am the Father, the Mother, the Sustainer, the Grandfather of the world, the knowable, the purifier, the sacred syllable AUM, and the three Vedas--Rk, Yajus and Sama
gatir bharta prabhuh saksi nivasah saranam suhrt
prabhavah pralayah sthanam nidhanam bijam avyayam
I am the Supreme Goal, Supporter, Lord, Witness, Abode, Refuge, Friend, Origin and End, the resting place and Imperishable Seed
tapamy aham aham varsam nigrhanamy utsrjami ca
amrtam cai 'va mrtyus ca sad asac ca 'ham arjuna
I give heat, I withhold as well as send forth the rain. I am Immortality as well as Death; I am both Being and Non-being, O Arjuna
traividya mam somapah putapapa yajnair istva svargatim prarthyante
te punyam asadya surendralokam asnanti divyan divi devabhogan
The knowers of the three Vedas, drinkers of Soma (the sap of Soma plant), purified of sin, worship Me by sacrifices for attainment of heaven. As a result of good deeds, they ascend to the world of the gods and enjoy the celestial pleasures in heaven
te tam bhuktva svargalokam visalam ksine punye martyalokam visanti
evam trayidharmam anuprapanna gatagatam kamakama labhante
Having enjoyed the pleasure of the great world of heaven they come to the mortal world on exhaustion of their merits. Thus conforming to the injunction of the three Vedas and desirous of enjoyments, they repeatedly come and go from the mortal world to heaven and back
ananyas cintayanto mam ye janah paryupasate
tesam nityabhiyuktanam yogaksemam vahamy aham
Those devotees, however, who worship Me alone thinking of none else and ever united, I myself attend to their wants and needs and provide them with security of what they have
ye 'py anyadevatabhakta yajante sraddhaya 'nvitah
te 'pi mam eva kaunteya yajanty avidhipurvakam
O son of Kunti, even those devotees who endowed with faith, worship other gods, they too worship Me alone, though improperly (out of ignorance)
aham he sarvayajnanam bhokta ca prabhur eva ca
na tu mam abhijananati tattvena 'tas cyavanti te
For, I am the Enjoyer and Lord of all sacrifices. But thses men do not know Me in reality and so they fall
yanti devavrata devan pitrn yanti pitrvratah
bhutani yani bhutejya yanti madyajino 'pi mam
Those who take to the worship of gods go to the gods; those who worship the manes reach the manes; those who adore the spirits reach the spirits and those who worship me attain Me
pattram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhaktyupahrtam asnami prayatatmanah
Whosoever offers to Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, that pious offering of the pure in heart, I accept
yat karosi yad asnasi yaj juhosi dadasi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kurusva madarpanam
O son of Kunti (Arjuna), whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer as oblation to the sacred fire, whatever you bestow as a gift; whatever you do by way of penance, offer it all to Me
subhasubhaphlair evam moksyase karmabandhanaih
samnyasayogayuktama vimukto mam upaisyasi
With you mind thus established in the Yoga of renunciation, you will be freed from the bonds of karma in the shape of good and evil consequences; and freed from them, you shall attain Me
samo 'ham sarvahbutesu na me dvesyo 'sti na priyah
ye bhajanti tu mam bhaktya mayi te tesu ca 'py aham
I am equally present in all beings, there is none hateful or dear to Me. But those who worship Me with devotion they are in Me and I also in them.
api cet suduracaro bhajate mam ananyabhak
sadhur eva sa mantavyah samyag vyavasito hi sah
Even if a man of most sinful conduct worships Me with exclusive devotion, he should be considered as a saint, for he has rightly resolved
ksipram bhavati dharmatma sasvacchantim nigacchati
kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati
Speedily does such a man become righteous and attain lasting peace. Know that, for certain, My devotee never perishes
mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papayonayah
striyo vaisyas tatha sudras te 'pi yanti param gatim
Women, Visyas (traders) and Sudras (workers) and even those born of the lowly wombs, O Partha (Arjun), taking refuge in Me they also attain the highest state
kim punar brahamanah punya bhakta rajarsayas tatha
anityam asukham lokam imam prapya bhajasva mam
Then how much more is the worship of holy Brahmins, the devout royal sages who attain the supreme state. Having got into this joyless and impermanent world, you do worship Me alone
manmanna bhava madbhakto madyaji mam namaskuru
mam evai 'syasi yuktvai 'vam atmanam matparayanah
Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, adore Me and make obeisance to Me, thus uniting yourself to Me and entirely depending on Me, you shall come to Me
