Southern RI 4-H Fair

Congratulations on a great 2009 SRI 4-H Fair!

Thank you to everyone who helped at the fair clean up!  We all had a great weekend of contests, a delicious Pig Roast and fun!!  Thank you to all who helped out at the gate, in the kitchen, with the Pig Roast and with all the events!  It takes a year of planning to get the fair organized and planned.  Thanks to those who devote so much time to running a wonderful event!  If you get a chance, say thanks to our Fair Committee members, volunteers and Show Superintendents!!

We meet the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7 pm, Louttit Library (except July and Aug)

For questions on the fair, please attend our next fair meeting or email Grace, our Fair President, at theellisfarm@gmail.com

Any club wishing to have a food booth at the fair must attend a fair meeting to present their proposal by the February meeting for preliminary approval.  Clubs must then obtain all required licenses and permits and attend a follow up fair meeting.  A copy of these permits must be presented to the fair committee by the May meeting.

The Southern Rhode Island 4-H Fair

Help is appreciated! All clubs should help with clean up!!!!

The SRI 4-H Fair is open to all RI 4-H members.  4-Hers must be ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2009.

Leaders:  Be sure all members have completed enrollment forms and age requirements are met!  All registrations are due June 1st to MaryBeth - no exceptions!  There is a link for the Exhibit Hall and Livestock registration forms and the required permission form on this site.  Go to Registration Info for all forms.

Check the state 4-H website for the State 4-H Guidelines.  These guidelines include important information about entering topics, art and bringing animals to the fair.  Class numbers are included to help make completing registration forms easier.  Individual district fairs may have some additional events and requirements so keep up to date about YOUR fair.

The fair is an opportunity for 4-Hers to share their projects with other 4-Hers and to display topic projects, art, baked goods and to share what  4-H is all about.  Many 4-Hers have animals that they raise.  They will get a chance to compete in type and showmanship competitions during the fair.

No animals will be accepted late.  All animals MUST be checked in by the Superintendent.
Animals should not be brought to the wash rack or barn before check-in.  All livestock must use the livestock entrance to the fair.

The Exhibit Hall is open on Thursday from 3-6 pm only for display check in.
All pinewood derby cars are due at this time. * All pinewood derby cars must be official Boy Scout cars *  No cars will be accepted late for the race.  All cars must be brought to the Exhibit Hall on Thursday, 3-6 pm for check in and final weigh in.

Floral Arranging will also be held during the Exhibit Hall registration hours.  Be sure you have registered for floral design and the wreath contest on the Exhibit Hall registration form!!  Exhibit Hall will be open for check in:
3-6 pm on Thursday, June 26th

4-Hers are expected to work on their own animals.  Parents, leaders, and former 4-Hers are not allowed to fit animals!!Showmanship is required for anyone entering an animal in any show per State Guidelines.  Showmanship class divisions may be changed based upon the number of registrations received, at the discretion of the Superintendent.

You may only use 1 animal in showmanship (for example, if you have 3 chickens, pick
one to use as your showmanship animal.  The others will still be judged in breed classes).

Have Fun!!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who dedicate so much time throughout the year to make this fair great!

About 4-H

In Rhode Island, 4-H is the Youth Development Program of the University of
Rhode Island, Cooperative Extension, College of the Environment and Life
Sciences.

Participation in the 4-H Program is open to all interested youth, regardless
of race, color, sex or preference, religion, creed, national origin, or
handicap.  Members are between the ages of 8 and 19, and reside in every RI
demographic area – rural, suburban, and urban.  A special category for those
5-7 is called Cloverbuds and focuses on age appropriate activities.  There is
a small yearly fee to participate in the URI 4-H Program.

Youth may participate in 4-H through organized 4-H clubs, 4-H special interest
groups (short-term), 4-H school enrichment programs, agency-based clubs,
4-H after-school groups, family clubs, or as individual 4-H members.

4-H members complete projects, individually or in groups, ranging from science
and technology to healthy lifestyles; animal science to workforce preparation;
and environmental science to foods and nutrition.  In over 35 project areas,
members focus on learning by doing, applying leadership skills, making a
difference in RI communities, and learning to respect and get along with
people.  They learn life skills like responsibility, decision-making,
communication skills, problem solving, commitment, leadership, and teamwork.

4-H Volunteers are the keys to success of the 4-H Program.  Many serve as 4-H
Club Leaders working directly with youth in Clubs for Special Interest Groups.
Others recruit, train, and help other volunteers.
