Hi-Point Forms

Don't forget folks to send your forms up to Megan Sweetman (see contact us page for details). Also, big reminder to those who have paid up for an eligable for high point awards who haven't yet assisted at any events.. the clock is ticking so if you're one of those, don't forget to before the season's end which is quickly drawing to a close.

Baby News - Never too young to ride & drive standardbreds - just ask this lot!

For those who I guess must have been hiding under a rock to not have heard, SPPHASA has many junior members - the youngest being only 1 year old!

Though, this wont be for long as several members are expecting yet again!

The Herman's kicked off the trend (all your fault Cheryl ) who is now only months away from having their 3rd child, adding to their 2 boys. The Kingston-Mayne's are only a few weeks behind with baby number 2 due on May 26th and The Hryhorecs celebrated more than just their ring side success at the State Championships when the beans were spilled on their expentant arrival of a sibling for their daughter in September too!

Best of luck to all our expentant mums & their families and CONGRATULATIONS!

20th February 2009

State Championships

What a truly awesome day it was! A big thankyou must go out to the following people:- Mel Kittle and Narelle Hughes who decided not to compete and run the day, Mel for also organising all the rugs, Sue for organising all the rosettes and ribbons and Jo Burgess who made all those glorious garlands. I was lucky and got a peek at the garlands ahead of time (as where all who went to the last committee meeting), unfortunately, I didn't get to win one.. but you can bet ya I'll be trying damn hard to get one next year

There was a large crowd gathered to cheer on all the Standardbreds which was lovely to see, a few new faces and a few old ones in the ring which was wonderful. Whilst I had to leave early thanks to a stroppy one-year old (of the two legged vaierty), I have been assured that everyone had a blast and plenty of comments have been filtered back that spectators were loving every minute of it also.

Results will be available soon and pictures (yes I know your all hanging out for photos!) are also now up and available (as are photos from Murray Bridge) compliments of Mascar Photography. So be sure to check em out. Marianne did a wonderful job and the photos are glorious, I would also like to take this opportunity for thanking her also.

Last but not least, a big thankyou to our judges. In a different style, Judges judged exhibits side by side and awarded horses each to the placings they saw fit. Worked a treat! The calibre of the Standardbreds presented was amazing and a real credit to everyone involved. I'm glad I wasn't judging on the day! Phew! Truly not an easy thing to do. The bar of showing Standardbreds has certianly been raised and for those thinking of getting into standardbreds, gone are the days of the box headed, unco looking horses of the past.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED!

11th Feb - Club Updates

Hot Weather Policy

In light of the recent heat wave which has swept across Adelaide and the subsequent confusion in realtion to shows and events, the committee bas discussed and passed the introduction of a hot weather policy. In accordance with the Channel 9 News the friday before an event is scheduled, should the forecast be over 36 degrees, the event will be called off.

This will be in effect as of Monday 16th February, so be sure to make a note of it somewhere.

State High Point

Following the resignation of our current Point Secretary, Megan Sweetman has now taken over the roll. So effective immediately, all show high point cards need to be forwarded to Megan C/- Callington Post Office, SA 5254

In addition, just a small reminder to those who are eligable for High Point awards that the show season is nearly at a close for 2008-2009 as a result, if you haven't assisted at any shows, don't forget to, as you will forfeit your eligability in accorance with the ruling made at the last years AGM.

State Championships Judges Announced

Judges for the up and coming SPPHASA State Championships are Joyce & Lesley Burrows.

Drug Testing

The popularity of the Standardbred has boomed and as a result, we are seeing more and more Standardbreds out and about in and competition is fierce..  The committee has agreed the time has come to introduce random drug testing throughout the show season. A copy of the banned substances can be obtained via the EFA though a list will be coming soon to this site.

Secretary

Our current Secretary has been kind enough to give us a big "heads up" at her stepping down from the roll at the end of the season, but thankfully, will remain on the committee.. So we encourage anyone who may be interested to come along to a meeting and get involved.

Monthly Meeting

Next meeting will be held on Tuesday the 10th of March. Should you wish to come along to a meeting, please advise the President.

10th Feb - DRESSAGE WITH THE STANDIES

SPPHASA along with Heather Hartley are holding riding lessons / training day with Marion Von Saag (Level 2 EFA Coach) at Heather's property in Charlston, SA.
Cost per 1 hour lesson is $40.00
Spectators are welcome @ $10 for the day.

have your lesson and watch the others..

Can be ridden, lunging or any behavioural problems you wish to address but aren't sure how to tackle them.
Contact Heather directly on 0401691329 if further details are still required.

Can contact me for copy of the flyer to be emailed to you with booking form.

Excellent opportunity so don't miss out!

So you don't wanna do Dressage hey?

Dressage or at least its fundamentals, are in all forms of riding. Unfortunately most when they think of Dressage think of the likes of Anky Van Grunsven and Salinero, passages, piaffe's, dancing to music etc and think "OMG I can't do that!".

The basics of dressage are taught in any disciple and I quote one very successful show jumper saying "Show jumping is merely dressage with obstacles" as an example.

Teaching your horse the basics such as leg yields/aids, acceptance of the bit, suppleness etc (or for those who are familiar - the German Dressage Training Scale for example) will help set your horse up for a sucessful future whether it be for pleasure riding or show ring.

I personally use the German Dressage Training Scale as the basis for all my training and I encourage all riders to look into incorporating Dressage training as apart of their program.

So How Do We Get Started?

Thanks to the training day with Marion Von Saagh, riders of all levels are given an opporunity to work with one of the States elite Dressage instructors in a friendly environment. Find out for yourself how it can help you with your horse and improve your riding along the way. This training day is open to riders and all breeds of horses, not just standies. So be sure to check it out!

Show Programs

Following the receipt of the show program for Murray Bridge, there seems to be a need to shed some light on class selection for shows, as there appears to be no walk/trot classes at all.

This is not something deemed by the SPPHASA committee. As with all shows held by various show societies for the SPPHASA, the committee will submit their currently program but ultimately it is the decision of the show society holding the event which classes they run with and some don't always make the cut.

Due to the magnitude of the classes we hold to accomadate everyone's interests, from the led through to harness it certainly adds up to quite a program. If you have a problem with any of the programs or indeed classes that are listed, would like to see some different classes or perhaps cull a few, then come to a committee meeting to voice your opinion. (Just advise the President that you will be attending).

In reference to the high point, horses who do attend will still be able to claim points toward their highpoint. As to the class of the show, as it is a breed program, it will still be considered an inside event depsite not including walk/trot horses.

25th November 2008

It has seemed like an eternity since I updated this page (sorry folks) and many of you would have received your monthly newsletter in the mail today. Which has certianly spured me on.. hehe

Flaunt It Moves House

In what was a reluctant, sad but necessary sale according to owner Holly Hyrhorec, super Gelding Flaunt It has been sold and now resides with a lovely family in VIC. Of course, a true champion wins anywhere and Flaunt It has not disapointed his new family having already placed in the winners circle in his first show with them recently.

Leaderboards

This is now included in the newsletter and is coming soon to the website..

National High Point Update

So you're all proboby wondering when your cards will appear in the post.. well, any day now as it happens. Holly sent them Wednesday and so they should be received by entrants by Monday 27th Of October. If you haven't received yours by then, please contact Holly via phone immediately so a replacement can be sent out.

SA High Point Eligability

A letter has been sent out to members recently regarding a rule which has been added into the SPPHASA rule book following the most recent AGM including a copy of the rules in their entirity.

A lack of explaination has left a few members saying "What The???".

It has been well documented up until now that in order to qualify for the SA high point award, a member must assist in the running of 2 SPPHASA organised events, such as fun days, State champs, breed o rama etc. Up until now, it has been left to only the same few members for many years to run these events which are critical to the survival by the club. At the AGM is voted that in order to try and take the burden off those who always help out, it was mandatory for those wishing to be awarded High Point trohpies etc, to help out.

It was minuted at the AGM that people were required to assist from Start to Finish. This is something that will be brought up at the up and coming meeting on November 10th as the issue has been raised that it is not possible for many to stay all day, which can be from 6am in the morning until that of an evening in some cases.

There was also another high-point form sent out with these rules. If you have already paid for the highpoint, you do not need to fill this in and return it again. Should you have any doubt regarding your SA High Point, contact Kim Procter (see contact us page for details).

15th October 2008

National High Point

At the last meeting Holly was very excited to report that South Australia had a whopping 19 entries into the National High Point Competition. Which is sensational. It is also worth mentioning that they have confirmed that Walk/Trot ridden horses will also be eligable for National high point awards. YAY

SA High Point

In the not too distant future, you will be able to view your SA High Point standings both on the website and via the newsletter. So stay tuned for that. Also, a reminder to all members that you have 21 days to get your points in to the Points Secretary following an event. In addition there seems to be some confusion as to what is considered as an inside show as appose to an outside show..

Outside Show - an event where a full standardbred breed show program is not available, eg: pony club events even though they may have a seperate ring for standardbreds etc.

Inside Show - an event where a full standardbred breed show program is listed including all stallion, mare and gelding classes as well as harness.

Life Insurance

Just a reminder to all Life Members, unfortunately you still need to pay the insurance component to be eligable to show. So if you haven't done so already, forward your insurance off to the Registrations & Membership Officer.

Showing - The Champion & Reserve

For those members who do come along to the shows, in particularly to new members, what happens when Champion and Reserve Champions are rewarded can be somewhat confusing.. so I will attempt here to give yo'all a crash course..

There are 3 Standardbred stallions in a class. Standie A, B and C. Standie C wins the class so is therefore eligable for champion. The other classes are run (ie led mare & gelding). The winners of those classes are also eligable for champion and will go and compete against each other for Champion Led Standardbred. The trick is in reserve.. Say Standardbred C from the stallion class goes champion, the other eligable champion contendors are to stay in the ring, the horse/rider who ran 2nd to that horse in their respective class is ALSO eligable for Reserve!

It is important that should you run 1st or 2nd in any of your classes for which a champion is awarded, that you stay close by or you may risk loosing your chance at Champion or Reserve! These classes are not held and will simply be run without you. So be sure to ask if you are not sure..

Profile Of The Month

Consider this a warning.. hehehe.. the pages we ALL secretly loved are coming back to the newsletter.. yep the Profile of the month, which is also going to be backed up by the Horse Profile Of The Month on the website.. ;-)

SPPHASA State Championships

The time has come when the State Champs is once again up for discussion. If you have any ideas you would like to see at the States in 2009, then email your ideas to holsta77@hotmail.com (sorry Holly, dobbed ya in there). As at the next committee meeting and no doubt subsequent ones, the program will be in hot discussion. Aylesbury Lodge and Sathryns Browbands have already put forward they would sponsor the event, along with the Cass McCoy Perpetual trophy donated by the Robinson Family so it promises to be an event definately not to be missed.

Committee Meetings

These have now been moved from the first Tuesday of every month to the the first Monday of every month. So be sure to mark that in your calenders.

30th September 2008

Plough Day @ Windy Flat has been moved from October 26th to April 26th 2009 as it seems to clash with a number of other events on the same day. So we are looking for people who can help on the day.. We need, 2 folks on the gate, 2 to man the BBQ, 2 pencillers and 3 runners. If you think you may be able to volunteer your services, please contact Heather Heartley on 0401691329.

National High Point Nominations are coming to a close for 2008-2009 season. So if you haven't already done so, print the form off this website and send in your details to Holly ASAP.

Retraining Clinic : For those who live out near Loxton, Aylesbury Lodge in conjunction with Marlborough Park Saddlery are doing a re-training clinic @ Loxton Pony Club, open to all on November 16th. Details can be downloaded from www.aylesburylodge.com

Attending Committee Meetings: Everyone is welcome to a committee meeting. We encourage all members to come along and get involved, however, in accorance with the Constitution members wishing to attend a meeting, please remember to notify the President prior to the meeting of which they wish to attend.

1st August

Did you know that whilst many celebrate the horses' birthday today, Standardbreds are infact September 1st?

 Shocked

For those who braved the winter weather and attended the show at Sunnybrae last month, you'll be pleased to know that Jenny Barnes of "Barnes Photography" was on site and was seen snapping away at our lovely Standies. Just click on this link to see all the pics from the day, photos can be ordered through her website.

Show Me Sunnybrae!

Standardbreds look no different from any other breed, these photos (for those who are not yet convinced) help prove this... Can YOU pick all the Standies??

17th July 2008

WANNA DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT?

For a while now, people have been writing in asking to do a variety of different events. Well, SPPHASA is eager to partake in all those events, from a Dressage and Show Jumping Championship Series', Endurance competition days, Introduction to Showing Clinics and the list goes on. If you have an interest in a particular discipline and would like to see more of it within SPPHASA and would like to offer your help in establishing it within the club, then contact Melanie Kittel with your proposal.

Being on a committee is often a tiresome and sometimes thankless job and it takes many to put together a successful event. Fortunately, you DO get the benefit of making life long friends with a great bunch of people and give a few more lovely Standardbreds a life after racing.

JUNIOR CLASSES

How many times have you heared the younger generation "No point going in that class, I won't beat those professionals!"  Well, the committee have heared their plees and with great excitement are very pleased to announce the introduction of more junior classes to it's high point show program.  Including but not limited to, individual handler and best presented classes for those younger members along with their own highpoint award! So kids, with the first show only months away, it's time to dust off those joddies, polish up those boots and get ready to win!!!
