October 11, 2004-Here We Go Again! Another Matchup Between The Red Sox and Yankees! The Sox have been waiting for this series since Aaron Boone's game-winning homer in the 2003 Playoffs, that sent the Yankees to the World Series.

Yankees Key To Winning This Series

Series Preview.
October 11, 2004- 1. Beat Curt Schilling at least once In 2001, Schilling started three games against New York in the World Series, earning co-MVP honors with Randy Johnson. This season, Schilling was 2-0 against the Yankees in three starts with a 4.82 ERA, though all three outings came at Fenway Park. In the second of those games, Schilling allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings, his worst outing of the season. Schilling will pitch Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, so the Bronx Bombers will have their first crack at the Cy Young contender on their home turf. Five of Schilling's six losses this year came on the road, so he is beatable in the Bronx.

2. Repeat the starting pitching performance of the ALDS The Yankees were encouraged by the performances of Mike Mussina, Jon Lieber and Kevin Brown in the Division Series, and Javier Vazquez showed some improvement before a rough fifth inning in Game 4. But to beat the Red Sox, the rotation will have to be better. Mussina and Lieber will have to be at their best during the first two games at home. Brown was lit up in his last outing at Fenway, giving up four runs in two-thirds of an inning, but his last two starts have been significantly better. The wild card is Orlando Hernandez, who could step into Vazquez's spot if his tired right shoulder shows improvement in the next few days.

3. Hold the lead New York's bullpen was not at its best in the Division Series, as Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera combined to blow a save in Game 2, while Felix Heredia and Tanyon Sturtze allowed three runs in an inning in Game 3. The Yankees have been comeback artists all season, posting 61 come-from-behind wins in the regular season and two dramatic comeback victories against the Twins in the ALDS, but the Boston offense has the ability to come back with the best of them, even against Rivera. Two of Mo's four blown saves in the regular season were against the Sox, who have more confidence against the All-Star closer than any other team in baseball.

4. One-two punch Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have ignited the Yankees' offense since being moved to the top two spots in the lineup, and they must continue to do so against the BoSox. Jeter hit .316 in the first round, driving in four runs in four games. A-Rod stepped up his game in a big way against the Twins, batting .421, including the crucial game-tying hit in Game 2. Rodriguez also created the series-clinching run by himself, doubling, stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch. If Jeter and A-Rod can get on base, they will force the Sox to pitch to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui, giving New York numerous scoring opportunities.

5. Control Johnny Damon Damon, Boston's sparkplug at the top of the lineup, thrives in this heated rivalry. Damon hit five of his 20 homers against the Yankees this season, more than he did against any other team. Although David Ortiz hit .329 against New York to Damon's .272, the leadoff hitter had more homers and RBIs against New York than the MVP candidate, driving in more runs against the Yankees than any Boston hitter not named Manny Ramirez. If the Yankees can keep Damon off the basepaths, it will lessen the chances of Ramirez and Ortiz from doing more damage.

Red Sox Keys To Winning This Series

Red Sox Keys To Beating The Yanks!
October 11, 2004- 1. Get Pedro on track It was rare for Sox ace Pedro Martinez to sound so defeated after the Yankees beat him for the second time in a week, back on Sept. 24. Martinez called the Yankees his "daddy" and said he wished they'd "disappear." Some Sox players think it was simply a psychological ploy by Martinez. In any event, the Sox need Martinez to regain his swagger against the Yankees. Judging by the velocity he had in his victory over the Angels, Martinez is feeling healthy and primed for this challenge.

2. Damon on base The longer the season goes, the more apparent it is that leadoff Johnny Damon is every bit as important to the Boston offense as Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. Not only does Damon tax pitchers by squirting one foul ball after another, he is a pest whenever he's on base. It will make life far more stressful for the Yankees if Damon continues to play at the level he played at against the Angels, not to mention the bulk of the 2004 season.

3. Jeter and A-Rod off base The most underrated aspect of perennial All-Stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez is their baserunning ability. Both players have tremendous instincts on the bases, and love to stick daggers in the other team by stealing third when it is least expected. If the Sox can contain Jeter and A-Rod, American League MVP candidate Gary Sheffield will be a lot more manageable. A-Rod helped clinch the Division Series over the Twins by stealing third with one out, which put him in position to score the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

4. Taking care of home-field After the sox secured a split of the first two games in New York in last year's ALCS, they had plenty of confidence that they would be going to the World Series. And the way the Sox play at Fenway Park, who could blame them? However, the Sox wound up losing two of three at Fenway, and ultimately, that might have been every bit as responsible for their defeat as the well-chronicled events of Game 7. At the very least, the Sox need to win two out of three at home.

5. Stay confident in bullpen Former Sox manager Grady Little learned all too well a year ago what can happen when you don't have enough faith in your bullpen. Expect manager Terry Francona to rely on Keith Foulke, Mike Timlin and Alan Embree for critical outs. As prolific as the New York lineup is, it would be asking a lot of Curt Schilling and Martinez to still be on the mound in the eighth and ninth innings. This could become an even bigger factor if Schilling's bothersome right ankle hinders him in this series, or if the Yankees are effective in forcing Martinez into a lot of pitches in the early innings.

Ichiro Chasing History
September 22, 2004-The Mariner's Ichiro Suzuki had 4 more hits tonight as the Mariners spanked the Anaheim Angels, 16-6. Ichiro has had 9 hits in the last two games against Anaheim. He has a definate shot at breaking the single-season hit record of 257, set by George Sisler back in the 20's. Ichiro now has 247 hits.click here to keep track of Ichiro's record chase.

Two More Hits For Ichiro
September 24, 2004-The hits just keep coming for Ichiro Suzuki. He had 2 more tonight in the Mariners' 8-7 win over the Texas Rangers in Arlington. He is now ONLY 8 hits away from tying Sisler's record, and 9 hits from breaking it. It looks like he WILL break this 84 year old record. The only thing that may prevent Ichiro from breaking the record is intentional walks. The Rangers did it tonight, and with the Mariners playing the West's top teams (Oakland and Texas), to close out the season, look for Oakland and Texas to put Ichiro on with free passes. Ichiro now has 249 hits.

Ichiro Goes 1 for 4 in Mariners' Loss
September 25, 2004-Ichiro edged a little closer to the single-season hit record today, going 1 for 4 with a 2 run single against the Texas Rangers. Ichiro now has 250 hits for the season. The Mariners took a two run lead, but they couldn't hold it as the Rangers came back and won the game, 5-4. It was a big win for the Rangers, because the Oakland A's had lost to the Anaheim Angels earlier on saturday. With their win, Texas is now only 2 games behind the A's. Another Wild West showdown between Anaheim, Oakland, and Texas.

Ichiro Gets Hit #251 in Mariners' Romp over Texas.
September 26, 2004-Ichiro Suzuki collected another hit, No. 251. That moved him into sole possession of fifth place for the most hits in a season and within six of Hall of Famer George Sisler's record, 257, set in 1920. click here for more Ichiro coverage as he chases history.

Ichiro, who singled in the sixth, finished 1-for-4. The Rangers walked him intentionally in the second, while he grounded out in the first and fourth innings and struck out in the eighth. The Mariners went on to spank the Rangers, 9-0. The A's play Anaheim later tonight on ESPN, and can pick up another game lead on both Texas and Anaheim in the West.

Ichiro Goes 1 for 4 in Mariners' Loss in Oakland Tonight.
September 27, 2004-Ichiro moved one more hit closer to Sislers' record tonight in Oakland, going 1 for 4 in the Mariners' loss to the A's. It was hit No. 252 For Ichiro. He is now 6 hits away from becoming the single-season hits leader.

The A's Barry Zito pitched well until the top of the 7th inning. Light-hitting Willie Bloomquist hit a game-tying 3-run home run to lock the score at 5-5. But the A's got a "Gift" in the bottom of the ninth when Durazo hit a pop up that was dropped by the Mariners' shortstop Jose Lopez, who crashed into Raul Ibanez and the ball squirted out of his glove. That play sums up the Mariners' entire season. A's Rookie Bobby Crosby hit the game-winning sacrafice fly to seal the victory, 6-5.

It was a HUGE win for the A's because the Anaheim Angels are breathing down their necks. The Angels beat Texas in Arlington earlier in the evening to close within a half game of Oakland. So, with this win, the A's remain 1 game up on Anaheim. This race is going down to the wire. Should be fun to watch. The Wild Wild West! For more Oakland A's coverage, Click Here! Also, click Here for more Ichiro coverage as he chases history.

Ichiro is sitting on 254 hits! 2-4 tonight in Oakland
September 28, 2004-Ichiro and the Mariners owned Oakland ace Tim Hudson tonight, spanking the A's 7-2. Ichiro was 2-4 and is now ONLY 4 hits from the record! With the win, the Mariners created a dead-even tie between the A's and Angels in the West. Anaheim beat Texas tonight in Arlington, behind two home runs by Vladimir Guerrero. The A's may be in trouble, because the Angels are clicking, with Troy Glaus and Vlad hitting well. The A's on the other hand are in a hitting and pitching slump. But, maybe it will be a good thing that the A's don't make the Playoffs this year. After all, they NEVER get out of the first round anyway!! Why waste all the A's fan's time? Either way, it will be an awesome showdown between Oakland and Anaheim this weekend. This series will be for the season, to the winner go the spoils. Should be fun!

Mariners Bump Oakland out of 1st Place Tonight.
September 29, 2004-Mariners' Rookie left hander Bobby Madritsch shut down the A's tonight, and Ichiro collected his 255th hit of the season. Madritsch pitched a complete game as Seattle won 4-2 and dropped the slumping, choking A's out of first place. Anaheim now leads the West as they came back and beat Texas tonight 8-7 in Arlington. The Rangers have been eliminated from post season.

So, it looks like the AL West will be decided this weekend in Oakland between the A's and Angels. The way the A's are slumping right now, look for Anaheim to finish them off this weekend. For more baseball coverage, Click Here!

Ichiro Gets One Hit in Loss to Oakland Today
September 30, 2004- OAKLAND -- If the Major League single-season hits record falls, it will happen at Safeco Field. That became a certainty Thursday afternoon at Network Associates Coliseum, where Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki had one hit -- a single in the third inning -- in five at-bats, leaving him one hit shy of George Sisler's record 257-hit season in 1920. "Save it for the hometown folk," manager Bob Melvin said. "In a way, that's good, but in a way, I'm sure [Ichiro] would like to have gotten it out of the way. I'm sure the fans in Seattle are going to be excited about him coming home." While Ichiro goes for the record in Seattle, the Athletics and Angels will fight it out for the American League West championship. With the Athletics beating the Mariners, 3-2, on Bobby Crosby's solo home run in the ninth inning off Scott Atchison, and the Angels losing to the Rangers, the top two teams in the West are tied with three games remaining. "It shapes up to be a very emotional weekend in Seattle, which is good," Melvin said. The odds of breaking Sisler's 84-year-old record definitely are on the outfielder's side. The Mariners have three games remaining -- at home against the Rangers -- and Ichiro's longest hitless drought this season has been two games.

Ichiro 3-5 Tonight, Now Holds The Hits Record!
October 1, 2004-SEATTLE -- The first two balls Ichiro Suzuki hit fair Friday night moved him to the top of the all-time single-season hit list. The Mariners right fielder replaced Hall of Fame first baseman George Sisler in the record book with a single to center field in the third inning on a full-count pitch from Texas Rangers right-hander Ryan Drese. It was the 258th hit of the season for Ichiro, one more than Sisler had in 1920 with the St. Louis Browns.

The historical baseball was taken out of play, fireworks above the left-field bleachers went off and Ichiro was congratulated by all of the Mariners and Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira. Ichiro tied Sisler's record in the first inning when he bounced a single over third baseman Hank Blalock's outstretched glove. That hit was Ichiro's 919th in his four seasons with Seattle, the most during a four-year period by any player in Major League history. Oh, by the way, The Mariners beat Texas, 8-3, and Ichiro had 3 hits and now stands alone with his record setting 259 hits for the 2004 season. A great ending for the Mariners, who have had a horrible season.

Ichiro ends season with .372 Batting Average, 262 hits.
October 3, 2004-SEATTLE -- Ichiro finished the 2004 season today with a total of 262 hits! A new record for a single season. And while that was the best of the marks he established, there were several others listed below.

His .372 batting average was the eighth highest since 1950, the exact average of .372159 ranking behind Nomar Garciaparra's .372400 in 2000.

He also has 924 hits in his first four years, breaking Bill Terry's mark of 918 (1929-32) as most ever for four seasons.

Ichiro had 50 hits for September/October, giving him five months in his career with 50 or more! He already was the only player in history with more than two 50-hit months in a season.

He had 225 singles, passing Wee Willie Keeler's mark of 206 in 1898.

He had 762 plate appearances, an American League record, 11 shy of the Major-League record of Lenny Dykstra in 1993.

"I don't think any player can have a perfect season, a complete season," Ichiro said. "You can only prepare for such a season."

Asked if he was satisfied with 262 hits after the pursuit of George Sisler's mark of 257, he replied, "If I didn't think I was satisfied, a lot of guys would kill me."

A great season for Ichiro. Especially the kind of season the Mariners had, finishing 63-99, after getting shut out by Texas 3-0 in the final game of the 2004 season. Today's game was also the last game for Ichiro's teammate Edgar Martinez, who is retiring as the best DH in baseball history.
