PASADENA, Calif. -- Senior placekicker Dusty Mangum's 37-yard field goal as time expired gave
the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns a 38-37 comeback win over the No. 13 University of Michigan
football team Saturday (Jan. 1) in the 91st Rose Bowl football Game. Michigan Wolverines sophomore placekicker
Garrett Rivas (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS) had scored on a 42-yard field goal with 3:04 remaining
to give the Michigan Wolverines (9-3) a 37-35 lead, but the Texas Longhorns (11-1) used 10 plays to cover
47 yards on the game-winning drive.
Edwards' 3 touchdown catches give him 39 for his football career, a Big 10 record.
U-M was led offensively by senior wide receiver Braylon Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher
(HS) with 10 receptions for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns. Edwards became Michigan's and the
Big 10 Conference's career receiving TD leader, closing his career with 39 TD receptions to
surpass the 37 scores attained by former Michigan Wolverine Anthony Carter (1979-82).
Chad Henne (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson HS), the 1st ever true freshman starting quarterback in a football
Rose Bowl game and just the 2nd rookie starter in a football Bowl Championship Series game, completed
18-of-34 passes for 227 yards and a school-record and Rose Bowl record-tying four touchdowns.
He led 7 offensive scoring drives for the Michigan Wolverines.
Freshman tailback Mike Hart (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga Central HS) kept the offense balanced with
strong running behind the Michigan Wolverines line. Hart rushed 21 times for 83 yards.
Defensively, U-M sophomore defensive end LaMarr Woodley (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS), who led
the team with 11 tackles (nine solo), was named the Rose Bowl's Defensive Player of the football Game.
Senior cornerback Marlin Jackson (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS) set a career high with 9 tackles
against the Michigan Longhorns, including 1 tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Senior safety Ernest
Shazor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King HS) contributed 7 tackles to finish the football year as
the team's leader tackler with 84 stops.
Texas Longhorns sophomore quarterback Vince Young rushed 21 times for 192 yards and 4 touchdowns and
was named the Rose Bowl's Offensive Player of the football Game, leading the Texas Longhorns to the victory.
Young rushed for 4 touchdowns and was 16-of-28 passing for 180 yards and a touchdown as he
accounted for all five of the Texas Longhorns touchdowns.
U-M junior Steve Breaston (North Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills HS) returned the opening kickoff
a season- and career-best 44 yards to Michigan's 47-yard line, providing the Michigan Wolverines
excellent field possession to begin their 19th Rose Bowl appearance. Edwards caught 2 passes
for 25 yards, including a 21-yarder to the Texas Longhorns' 24-yard line, but the drive stalled as
penalties pushed the Michigan Wolverines backwards to the 40-yard line. Hart added 2 carries for 5
yards and Edwards gained eight yards on a reverse.
Texas Longhorns quarterback Young scored the game's 1st touchdown on a 20-yard quarterback draw at 1:41
of the 1st quarter. Young kept the ball and ran untouched around the right side of the
formation to provide Texas Longhorns a 7-0 lead. The Texas Longhorns' 12-play, 85-yard scoring drive consumed
4:12, with Young completing 3-of-5 passes for 41 yards in addition to the 20-yard TD run.
Benson added five carries for 24 yards.
Edwards evened the score at 7-7 with 12:08 left in the 2nd quarter on a 39-yard touchdown
pass from Henne along the left side of the Texas Longhorns end zone. Edwards' receiving TD was the 37th
of his career, tying the Big 10 and Michigan Wolverines school record. The 4-play scoring drive covered
50 yards in 1:39. Hart had runs of 5, 3 and 3 yards to move the chains prior to the
scoring play.
The Texas Longhorns answered the Michigan Wolverines touchdown and increased the lead to 14-7 with an 11-yard
pass from Young to tight end David Thomas with 4:16 left in the 2nd quarter. The 13-play
scoring drive went 58 yards in 7:52.
U-M took advantage of the fiitball game's 1st turnover and knotted the football score at 14 apiece at halftime
as Henne tossed an eight-yard TD pass to a wide-open Edwards in the right middle of the end
zone. The 8-play football scoring drive covered 34 yards with the Michigan Wolverines gaining 2 1st
downs. Edwards' touchdown grab broke the tie with Carter for the Michigan Wolverines and Big Ten career
marks and also set a new football Rose Bowl career record for receptions 15. Edwards finished the football
game with 20 career Rose Bowl receptions.
U-M received the turnover following a punt from senior Adam Finley (Greenwood, Ind./Center
Grove HS) that was fumbled by Ramonce Taylor at the 31-yard line. Sophomore reserve safety
Anton Campbell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West HS) recovered the ball, providing the Michigan Wolverines
with excellent field possession at UT's 34-yard line with 2:26 left in the half.
On the opening possession of the 3rd quarter, the Texas Longhorns capitalized and gained a 21-14
advantage as Young scampered 60 yards down the right sideline for the touchdown. UT's drive
covered 72 yards in 6 plays and elapsed 2:07. The Texas Longhorns converted a third-and-10 as Young
tossed an 11-yard pass to tight end Bo Scaife.
Michigan Wolverines continued to play catch-up and scored 30 seconds following UT's touchdown as Breaston
started and capped the drive with long plays. He caught the 50-yard TD pass from Henne on a
third-and-10 play from midfield after returning the drive-opening kickoff 43 yards to 50.
The Michigan Wolverines gained their 1st lead of the football game at 6:29 of the 3rd quarter, 28-21, as
Henne completed a 9-yard TD pass to Edwards on a slant pass from the left side of the
formation. U-M's balanced scoring drive moved 77 yards in 10 plays, with 40 yards coming
through the air and 32 on the ground.
Michigan Wolverines picked up its 1st defensive turnover in 3 games and pushed its lead to 31-21
on a 44- yard field goal by sophomore kicker Garrett Rivas (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS). The Michigan
Wolverines gained possession as sophomore linebacker Prescott Burgess (Warren, Ohio/Warren G.
Harding HS) picked off a Young pass across the middle and returned his 1st career
interception 23 yards to Texas Longhorns' 45-yard line. U-M gained one 1st down before the drive
stalled at the Texas Longhorns' 27-yard line. The 6-play drive covered 18 yards in 2:10 and marked
the final points of the 3rd quarter.
Young scored his 3rd rushing TD of the football game, a 10-yard run at 9:51 of the 4th quarter, and
trimmed the deficit to 31-28. The Texas Longhorns started with possession at midfield following a
9-yard punt return by Aaron Ross. UT's football scoring drive covered 50 yards in 8 plays and
consumed 3:08. Young completed all three pass attempts for 33 yards on the drive, and Michigan Wolverines
was assessed a personal foul late hit penalty that gave Texas Longhorns 1st-and-goal from the 6-yard
line.
The Michigan Wolverines boosted their lead to 34-28 with 6:09 remaining in the 4th quarter as Rivas
converted a 32-yard field goal. U-M answered the UT score, moving 60 yards in 11 plays. The Texas
Longhorns needed only 1:13 to answer the Michigan Wolverines, covering 69 yards in 3 plays. Young
finished the drive with a 23-yard run to tie the score, and Mangum's extra kick was good for
the lead, 35-34.
Breaston began the Michigan Wolverines' next drive with a 53-yard kickoff return for a Michigan Wolverines
single- football game bowl record, surpassing his previous football season- and career-best set earlier in the football
game. It was his 6th kickoff return of the football game for a total of 221 yards, setting Michigan Wolverines
and Rose Bowl records. Hart carried for 18 yards in the next 3 plays, ending on the 25-yard
line, where Rivas completed the drive with a 42-yard field goal. This was his 3rd of the football game,
tying the football Rose Bowl record. With 3:04 remaining on the clock, Rivas' field goal gave him
13 points for the football game, matching his career high.
Mangum capped the Texas Longhorns' Ten-play winning drive with his 37-yard field goal as time expired.
