Reiki

Commonly recognized as being rediscovered in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui.  Rei translates from Japanese as Universal (or Spiritual) and Ki as Life Force Energy. Ki is the same as the Chinese Chi or Qi, the building blocks of all of Existence. Reiki is specifically the Life aspect of this Universal energy. It is conscious, intelligent and highly beneficial to any who come into contact with it. The Healer is healed along with the client during a session. The Master Teacher receives attunements whenever he/she does them.

Reiki is not a religion, it isn't really even a Spiritual Path. It is a means of purifying the Mind/Body/Spirit so that the pure Life Force that we usually block out can reach through Healing us and those we come in contact with. Considering the literal definition of Reiki it's not unfair to call it Divine Energy. There is no reason at all that practicing Reiki should interfere with any other spiritual/religious Practice. By all rights, practicing Reiki should bring one closer to the Divine, no matter what aspect of the Infinite one deals with.

How Does It Work?

The practitioner is "Attuned" to channel the Reiki Energy. In the Usui Tradition, for someone to channel Reiki they must be attuned by a Reiki Master Teacher. The Attunement process cleanses the mental/emotional/physical bodies and aligns the 7 base Chakras. This is what allows for an unimpeded flow of healing energy. Once one is Attuned the healings can begin! Just thinking the word Reiki will cause the energy to flow. There are about 10-15 common hand positions used to deliver Reiki throughout the body. The practitioner will either gently lay hands on the client or their hands will remain a few inches from the body. The aura, the energy field surrounding a living being, is where most illnesses and dis-eases develop. I personally find it quite effective to work within the body's energy field instead of directly touching a client.

During the Attunement process the Reiki symbols (Cho-Ku-Rei, Sei-Hi-Ke, Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen and Dai-Ko-Myo) are "drawn" into the aura at each Chakra point: Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral and Root. Cho-Ku-Rei means to "put the power here" or "God is Here". Sei-Hi-Ke means "Key to the Universe" or "Man and God Becoming One". Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen means "The Buddha in Me Reaches out to the Buddha in you to promote peace and Enlightenment". Dai-Ko-Myo means "Great Shining Light" or "Great Enlightenment" This symbol is used only by Masters. The symbols are then "tapped" into the palms of the hands and in some cases the feet. The student, meanwhile, sits on a stool with the hands held up chest high, eyes closed, palm to palm, and feet flat on the floor. The back is to be straight, head held high. The energy will flow through the top of the head straight down through the 7 core Chakra points just like liquid being pulled through a straw. In fact, the client is the one pulling the energy and the practitioner is the straw. This is true for Attunements and Healings.

There is an intense level of energy exchange that goes on during an Attunement. An interesting side effect to this is that the energy is physically palpable. It may feel tingly, warm, like a wind, fireworks, pink (Don't ask. It was pink I swear lol) Remember, the practitioner is a straw. More accurately, a Reiki practitioner is a flav-r-straw. If a Reiki person sees the energy as "The Love Energy Of The Universe" then to me, for example, they're going to feel pink, fluffy, soft, gentle and sweet. On the other hand, people tell me that my Reiki feels like fireworks or that I feel tingly. My view of Reiki is a bit broader because of my background, so I tend to work with a wider range of energy.

Aside from the physical effects there can also be visual or audible ones. You may meet your "Guide" or Spirit Animal. Sometimes your Teacher will let you know of one. During my first Attunement I kept hearing it storming, or at least water falling. We were in my Teacher's home in a sun room with plants. I asked her if she had a little fountain in the room with us. I could hear the confusion and her raised eyebrow in her voice when she said, "No". I asked her like 3 more times about different possible sources of water and was wrong on every one of them. After we finished the Attunement there was a CRASH of lightning and thunder and it stormed for about 10 minutes. Mind you, we were in Northern California in early October. They generally don't get rain that time of year ;) My Teacher received some interesting messages for me as well, so no one was left out of the fun.

What Can Reiki Do?

Reiki's abilities are based on the Degree of the practitioner. According to the Usui Tradition there are 3 (sometimes 4) Degrees. 1st Degree- symbol Cho-Ku-Rei - allows for self treatment and treatment of others for physical issues, stress relief, energy/chakra balancing, mild pain relief. 2nd Degree - symbol Sei-Hi-ke and Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen - allows for treatments of emotional and/or mental issues like depression and also allows for past-present-future workings and long distance sessions. 3rd Degree - symbol Dai-Ko-Myo AKA Master Symbol - works on a soul level. It draws attention to Karmic Patterns so that we may break them. Master Teacher is sometimes called 4th Degree, but the only difference is that a Master Teacher passes on Attunments while a Master does not. I suppose the distinction is purely for those that do not wish to teach. ;)

Reiki is safe to be used on pets, plants, infants and a host of inanimate objects. Use it to cleanse the anger off your fast food, use it on medications to reduce negative side effects or boost the positive ones. Reiki your plants and watch them thrive. Use Reiki to relax after a hard day or to calm down before blowing up at someone. Turn it on when your children are bouncing off the walls and watch them settle down. The uses of Reiki are limitless. What limits there are, are set purely by the practitioner's views about Reiki.

BTW almost forgot to mention this. Reiki is NOT a replacement for medical attention! If you break your arm go have it set then come to me so you can get out of that cast in half the time :-)

Who Can Use It?

Anyone can use Reiki once they are Attuned. There is no age limit or minimum age requirement. You don't have to read 80,000 esoteric books or have a Doctorate in Medieval Metaphysics (although an interest does allow for some creative Reiki uses ;)

Zen Reiki

This is a technique I developed using symbols that were flashed into mind constantly while I was trying to sleep one night about 10 years ago. I laid down to sleep. Closed my eyes. I felt a toasty-tingly-warm sensation working it's way down about a foot over my head. Saw an image, a symbol really, but it was constantly moving and wouldn't go away until I drew out the closest representation. (The Traditional Reiki symbols move as well. The symbols, many claim to be the only way to do Reiki, are actually approximations. The symbols used in Reiki are to focus the mind of the Healer, so that their own consciousness quiets down to allow the Reiki to flow through.) Thinking I was done, I laid back down, just to be flashed at again eleven-teen more times. OK maybe not eleven-teen but it was a lot. I was up until 4 in the morning jotting down "new to me" symbols and feeling the corresponding Chakras respond to the new symbols.

In this technique there are 32 Chakra points. The major 7- Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, and Root. I have discovered symbols for the Transpersonal chakra point located about a foot above the head. The Soul point located about 1 inch above the head. The Grounding point located just below the feet. The Etheric body, or Aura, which is comprised of the Emotional/Mental/Astral energy bodies. The Hands and Feet are the final Chakra Point on this plane of Existence. The other 20 Chakra points are in the Spirit Realm. As such they have no real physical location to equate them to. So, I used the Tree of Life as a rough map.
For more information on the 32 Point Chakra System I urge you to read New Chakra Healing by Cyndi Dale. The purple text is the main 10 points on the Tree. Text in red marks the 10 pathways outlining the Tree of Life.

Zen Reiki Treatments

In addition to the 20 Spiritual Chakra points there are 4 new-to-me symbols. E-Shi-Ki, which means Consciousness. It brings our Awareness to the level of our Higher Self. Mou-Ku-Teki represents Divine Purpose. It strengthens and cleanses all levels of the Aura so that we may be fully aligned with our Divine Purpose. Shi-Zu-Ka literally means quietness, can also be called Nirvana. This symbol promotes Tranquility and Peace. The Fu-Hen-Teki is the Master Symbol of Zen Reiki. It represents Divine Awareness and allows us to manifest our well-being.

Basic Spiritual Healing

Starting at the feet the Healer should visualize or draw the symbol for E-Shi-Ki. This opens and strengthens the channel between our physiological and Spiritual consciousnesses. At the client's back draw down the spine or visualize Mou-Ku-Teki. This cleanses and balances the Etheric body on all levels. At the front of the client, approximately near the solar plexus, draw or visualize Shi-Zu-Ka. This will Ground and Center the client making it easier for him/her to "hear" their instructions from their Higher Self. If there is a particular issue that needs to be addressed the final symbol, Fu-Hen-Teki, should be drawn or visualized about 18" above the client's head. This strengthens our connection to the Divine and brings Awareness of this connection to the surface.

Universal Chakra Alignment

Links the Spirit to the physical realm through the Ground Chakra using the E-Shi-Ki and the Rama. Followed by a cleansing of the Etheric bodies with the Mou-Ku-Teki and Om. Next we balance the physiological Solar Plexus with the Cho-Ku-Rei. When done, we follow-up with the Shi-Zu-Ka to allow more Divine Energy to permeate the Spiritual, Personal and Physical bodies. At the Heart Chakra the Se-Hi-Key is drawn followed by Harth. At the Crown the Dia-Ko-Myo, Gnosa and Fu-Hen-Teki are drawn in that order so that the Crown is balanced at the physical level first, then personal, then Divine.
