While the Carribeans are exploring the productionof bio-fuels from sugar cane America is beginning to face up to the task of finding alternative energy solutions in order to reduce its dependence on usage of foreign oil. Cost of gasoline per gallon is nearing $3 and there has been a steady increase in the price of food and general merchandise. Solutions to high prices and foreign oil dependence is being sought everywhere.There was talk of lifting the ban on offshore drilling. Some want to build more nuclear power plants to generate more electricity or increase taxes on the big oil companies in order to reduce their profits. There was mention of allowing consumers a break from paying the federal gas tax in order to reduce the price at the pump. Congress has allowed for more grants and subsidies for alternative energy production projects such as with corn ethanol, or wind and solar endeavors and also to encourage energy conservation. As the auto-industry moves to build and sell more hybrid and electric cars; production and delivery of corn ethanol has increased and the batteries to be installed in electric cars are being manufactured. America looks to find the pearl in the oyster that will help to satisfy and supply oil alternatives. The $3 per gallon gasoline is not as bad as $4 which consumers paid in 2008. Last week new legislation was introduced to Congress and passed by the House of Representatives - 'the American Clean Energy and Security Act’. Next the U.S. Senate is expected to deliberate, analyze and to pass the legislation on to the President who will sign it into law. The bill provides funds to create millions of energy-environmental related jobs. Nuclear Program Continues. A lot of tall talk is coming from North Korea and Kim Jong II regarding the architect of its nuclear power program and achievements. The frequency of missile testings could lead to advancements in the arms race and most assuredly keeps North Korea in the international spotlight of news. Testing occurred in April and May and plans are for other missile testings around July Fourth as the U.S. celebrates Independence Day. International media is reporting that Kim Jong II has now issued a threat to the U.S.; that if they are prevented from testing or if they are attacked they intend to defend themselves. Kim Jong II is a man of obvious intrigue with a definite scientific interest in the fundamental progress of North Korea’s nuclear program. With valor and enthusiasm he continues to authorize satellite and missile testings just as he continues to plan and govern. Meanwhile, the U.S. and U.N. watch with caution and proceed with sanctions.
