Bubby's Story

Her Fight For Survival

A Night to Remember

I was eagerly awaiting my first foal of my beautiful home bred mare Falame.

This was my first foal since Falame herself was born 4 years ago! She kept me busy with many a false alarm two weeks prior to the foal being born (thank goodness for foaling alarms!). Falame finally went into serious labour at 9.30pm on the 24th of September 2001.

I was able to watch the proceedings but at one stage I did disturb her and she got up and moved with the babys head just out which worried me so I backed off until the baby was safely born.

I ripped the sac surrounding the head off and a couple more pushes the foal was out. I was so excited when I realised it was a bay filly with no white feet, but my elation turned to dismay when I checked her head out in the torchlight. Her upper muzzle was differednt to any I had seen before.

At first I thought her muzzle was broken when the mare had gotten up but it was solid when I felt inside.

The filly was wasting no time and was attempting to get up before her legs were even out! No time to waste she thought! Even though things weren't quite right I could see she had a lovely head.
