"A Scanner Darkly" is set in suburban Orange County, California in the future. It imagines a paranoid world in which it seems two of every 10 Americans has been hired by the government to spy on the other 8 -- in the name of national security and drug enforcement. When one reluctant government recruit (Reeves) is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a journey into the absurd, where outsourced government contractors largely define the social construct, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode, and where not even his girlfriend can be trusted. The film highlights the inconsistencies and ironic consequences of the war on drugs

In the last months of the Second World War, an American administrative Lieutenant is captured by German forces during the Battle of the Bulge. Sent to a German Stalag Prison camp, Lieutenant Hart is at once thrust into the social order of POWs, where every man thinks of himself first with bribery and trading with German captors commonplace. When two African American pilots become the first non-white soldiers in the camp, one is murdered and the other accused of killing a white sergeant. Lieutenant Hart must then defend the black pilot against charges before an obviously racist American tribunal; unaware that the trial itself is only a front for the real secret of the prison camp.

Fine performances and a believable story revolve around a Yale graduate who is stuck in a rut of temp jobs. His bland friends can't help him get on his feet but a strange new roommate whom he thinks he can't stand actually brings out the life that he has pent up inside. At first glance this film may seem slow, a bit dark, and even depressing, but when examined as a whole after completion it really is a little slice of art with stand out performances from Cochrane, Sedgwick, and Astin

Slater: What are you talking about man?
Dawson: Check ya later! Check ya later!
Slater: Hey man, get off my case man.
Slater: I'm letting you have shotgun. But I want you to know it's because only 'cuz I'm goin' inside.
Lucas: Joe, is it O.K. if I leave the couch? 'Cause I'm gonna leave the couch now, okay? My ass is falling asleep, so I gotta go. I'm leaving.
[after Joe beats Lucas up in his office]
Joe: Here.
[hands Lucas a washcloth]
Joe: You deserved that, you know that.
Lucas: Yeah, I know it.
Gina: Lucas, what are you doing in here?
Lucas: My life has reached its pinnacle. Joe is letting me close the store tonight.
Debra: Hey Lucas, is it true you committed the perfect crime?
Lucas: Not entirely perfect.
Eddie: This music is the glue of the world Mark. It's what holds it all together. Without this, life would be meaningless.
Mark: Hey, did you hear about Lucas?
Eddie: Hey Lucas man, I hear you went to Vegas and you married a mobster's wife and now you've got a hit on you and stuff. Is that true?
Lucas: Not entirely true.
Eddie: Well outlaw man, we solute you.
Lucas: Thank you Eddie.
Eddie: No problem.
Mark: Hey, Lucas. I've decided I'm going to start a band.
Lucas: The first thing you need is a name. Then you'll know what kind of band you've got.
Mark: Right, right. I was thinking about, um, Marc. How does that sound?
Lucas: Is that with a C or with a K?
Mark: Well my name is with a K, so I was thinking my band's name could be with a C. That way it's kind of that psychedelic, you know, trip thing.
Lucas: Always play with their minds.
Joe: I want you to take these
[CD's]
Joe: , hold 'em against your chest, stand against the wall, and they're gonna take a photograph of you.
Warren: Why don't you go shove 'em up your ass?
Lucas: ...Because it would hurt a lot, Warren.
[Warren is being taken to jail]
Lucas: Don't drop the soap, Warren.
[Lucas has just gambled away all Joe's money]
Lucas: I wonder if I'll be held responsible for this.
Lucas: Joe, I think it's gonna be okay.
Joe: What makes you think that?
Lucas: Who knows where thoughts come from? They just appear.
A.J.: Lucas, do you think it's possible for a person to be in love with someone else and not even know it?
Lucas: In this life there are nothing but possibilities.
A.J.: Well, that's good, because I have to tell Corey I love her by 1:37.
Lucas: That's an excellent time.
A.J.: What's with you? Yesterday you were normal and today you're like the Chinese guy from the Karate Kid. What's with you today?
Lucas: What's with today today?
Joe: [after Lucas enters] Lucas!
Lucas: Joe!
Joe: Where's the money?
Lucas: Joe, the money is gone.
Joe: Yeah, I know it's gone... but where's it gone to?
Lucas: Atlantic City.
Joe: Atlantic City?... Is it coming back from Atlantic City?
Lucas: [nervous laugh] Oh, I don't think so, Joe.
Joe: What's it doing in Atlantic City, Lucas?
Lucas: ...Recirculating.
Joe: Recirculating?
Lucas: Yeah.
[Joe knocks the donation cup that Lucas was carrying out of his hands and grabs his arm]
Joe: Lucas, listen to me. I told Mitchell Beck that you forgot to deposit the money. I told Mitchell that the money was still here.
Lucas: Joe, that's not true. It's in Atlantic City... I swear.
Joe: Shut up, sit down, and don't you move.
Lucas: [sitting down] It could be in other cities by now...
Joe: Oh, shut up! Under no circumstances do I want you to leave that couch... unless it's to get me $9000, and then you bring it here to me, okay?
Lucas: Okay. You know, I think things are gonna be all right now, Joe.
Joe: Oh? And what makes you think that.
Lucas: Who knows where thoughts come from? They just appear.
[nodding]
Lucas: Mmhmm!
Joe: ...What a moron.
Lucas: Warren, look what you took.
[going through the CD's that Warren stole from the store]
Lucas: Rap... metal... rap... metal... And Whitney Houston.
Warren: It's for my girlfriend, okay?
Lucas: Suuure it is. You know, someone like you needs to diminish their criminal impulses, not magnify them. Maybe some jazz or some classical.
Warren: Maybe you bite me.
Jane: Actually, his new album tested well among teenage males.
Lucas: Jane, did you compare the percentage of teenage male Rex Manning fans to the incidence of homosexuality amongst teenage males?
Lucas: In the immortal words of The Doors, 'The time to hesitate is through.'
Lucas: The fat man walks alone.
Lucas: Joe, I can categorically say that you are not a bigger banana-head.
Lucas: I do not regret the things I have done, but those I did not do.
[about the CDs that Warren tried to shoplift]
Lucas: Rap, metal, rap, metal, Whitney Houston.
Lucas: I used to pee in my bed. I did. I, I wet my bed until I was ten. My mother turned me over to the county when I was ten to- not for being a bed wetter- but for being a bad seed. Anyways, 3 years went by, then Joe came. And he took me out, and I became the well adjusted person I am today.
Lucas: $9104. I counted it... twice.
Lady at Craps Table: I like your style.
Lucas: [proud, humble] Well Joe told me to count it twice...
Lucas: The long arm of the law has embraced our dear friend Warren.
High Roller: That's an 18,000 dollar bet, you sure you know what you're doin kid?
Lucas: I know this, that if I win this roll I will save the place that I work from being sold, and the jobs of my friends that work there. Thus striking a blow at all that is evil and making this world a better place to be in.
Lady at Craps Table: Huh?
Lucas: ...And I'll buy you guys a drink.
Lucas: Mark, who's your favorite singer?
Mark: Axl.
Lucas: Well if Axl Rose was driving down the highway, and saw Rex Manning stranded on the side of the road, do you think Axl Rose would stop and help him?
Mark: [thinks] ... Does Axl have a jack?
Tim Speedle: I love hotel rooms - body fluids everywhere.
[death by carbon monoxide]
Man: What killed that guy?
Tim Speedle: He had gas.
Eric Delko: Engines on that baby cost more than your car.
Tim Speedle: Maybe your car.
Tim Speedle: One minute you're ruling the world, the next, you're in a six-by-six.
[looking for evidence in a house]
Tim Speedle: Why's it always gotta be in the toilet?
[about a doctor's ugly Persian rug]
Tim Speedle: Just because you have a medical degree doesn't mean you have taste.
Suspect: I swear on my mother, all right?
Tim Speedle: I'm glad I'm not her.
Tim Speedle: She looked him right in the eyes when he was killing her.
Horatio Caine: And he looked back.
Alexx Woods: I can undress a dead body in my sleep.
Tim Speedle: I'm leaving that one alone.
Calleigh Duquesne: [Quickly walking through the break room] Hi guys, bye guys.
Eric Delko: [Stopping her] Hey, Calleigh, I heard you busted the stereo man.
Calleigh Duquesne: Hey, I heard you found out who the car crash victim really is.
Tim Speedle: Yup, he was a bad guy.
Calleigh Duquesne: You know, maybe not all bad.
Tim Speedle: I think the mob would disagree about 1.5 million times.
Calleigh Duquesne: Yeah, but you know, I was thinking. If he hadn't have stolen from the mob, then he never would have become a beach bum in Florida and then he never would have got picked up by the hurricane. Then if he hadn't got picked up by the hurricane he would have never hit Burton's car, and if it wasn't for hitting Burton's car, Burton would have gotten away with murder.
Eric Delko: [Smiling] Leave it to you, Calleigh, to find something good to come out of a hurricane.
Calleigh Duquesne: [Smiling] They do alleviate global warming.
[She leaves]
Tim Speedle: [to Eric] She's way too cheerful.
Eric Delko: I had my cell phone on vibrate, I was busy - didn't wanna get disturbed.
Tim Speedle: Busy with the left hand?
Eric Delko: Yeah... funny...
Alexx Woods: Please don't tell me we just gave a body away to a complete stranger.
Tim Speedle: Alexx, we just gave the...
Alexx Woods: Timmy, I know.
Eric Delko: Sorry I'm late. I was busy.
Tim Speedle: Busy with the left hand?
Eric Delko: [smirking] Very funny.
