Here is a few pics of 12" boxes before carpeting.  Notice the rigid construction.  All boxes are glued and screwed.  Screw holes are pre-drilled and countersunk.  This prevents the splitting of the Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and prevents screwhead protrusion after carpeting.  Also notice the center brace between the two 12" diameter speaker holes.  This ensures maximum stability.  Notice that all conjoining of material does not have any gaps.  As well. all boxes are sealed inside with a bead of MONO silicon.  The more airtight, the better the sound!  However, in the following pics the silicon has not yet been applied.

Here is a single sealed subwoofer enclosure design.  The exterior circular cutout was created to allow the subwoofer to mount flush with the outer surface of the box.  An additional circular cutout has been mounted on the interior to provide the seat for the sub.  Inside silicon sealant and carpet is yet to be applied.  The volume of this box is 95% of the design volume for the Infinity subwoofer shown here.  The box is very close to one cubic foot in volume.
