dos and donts of buying a puppy

below are a few reccomendations about buying puppies, things you should look for and things you should keep in mind

Do remember the only person who can register your puppy is the owner of the dam, do not accept a form with the sire and dams k.c numbers on for you to register them, this is a very common con, the kennel club will not accept a registration application from anyone other than the owner of the dam so if you buy a puppy for you to register yourself you are buying an unregisterable puppy, it will never have k.c papers.

DO see the original health results of the parents, if the owners have 'lost' the certificates do more homework before handing over your money. health screening costs a lot of money so people are usually careful with the certificate, most health results including hip scores and eye tests will be on the parents paperwork or in the case of recent L2 and H.C results on the k.c website, the k.c also have a list of phpv results. dont be embarrassed to check, it is you who will pay in the long run if the puppy has hereditary diseases. Do remember though that an L2 or HC carrier will make a wonderful pet, it will never have the disease so if you are only looking for a pet then dont be put off a carrier puppy.

DONT go with the children or with money in your pocket if the pups are ready to go, always have a think after you have seen the litter, most breeders will be happy for you to be certain before taking the pup, if its first come first served then let someone else take the risk. if at anytime you are unhappy about the conditions the pups/dam/other animals are kept in or if anything they breeders says makes you concerned then either ask them about it or walk away. remember at all times if you buy a pup out of pity then you are still putting money in the breeders pocket and they will continue to breed, if you are that concerned get in touch with the local rescues/rspca/dog wardens etc or contact other breeders who have no pups for sale and ask them for advice.

DO prepare a list of questions in advance and write them down, i am always pleased to see a list of questions as it shows the visitors have thought about the dog they are getting, be prepared for the breeder to ask you questions and give them the true answers not what you think they want to hear, ie dont tell them you go for loads of long walks in the country if you just want a dog to play in the garden with the kids, the puppy you choose may be one that demands a lot of excercise and will be a handful while his brother who is more laid back and quiet may have been more suitable. if they advise you against the breed because of your circumstances then maybe another breed would be better suited, it is far better to find out before you buy a puppy and possibly ruin its life or have it ruin yours. be honest with your answers and accept if the breeder doesnt think the one you have chosen will be suitable as an adult for your lifestyle, if you intend to show then tell the breeder this as well, the puppy you have chosen may not be suitable due to quality, there are usually only a couple of potential show puppies in the litter which may be priced higher but buying a lesser quality cheaper sibling with intention to show will only lead you to expense and disapointment, most breeders will not sell a L2hga or H.C carrier to someone who wishes to breed and such puppies are usually endorsed so you cannot register puppies from them so if this is your intention then honesty is the best policy. most swd are also endorsed until the relevant health tests have been carried out and some breeders will not lift restrictions under any circumstances.

DO contact breeders as soon as you have chosen your dog, most breeders especially the spanish water dogs have waiting lists and it is becoming more common in staffords due to the healths tests so be prepared to wait

DO ask for a contract of sale and reciept for your money, if the k.c document isnt available this isnt unusual as they can take some time to get processed but you should get something in writing confirming the pups will be registered and when the breeder expects them to arrive and should be able to see the dams certificate, some breeders will now give purchasers copies of the sires and dams certificates if the papers have not arrived by then, also any endorsements and the conditions that they will be lifted under should be made clear. above all dont just sign a contract without reading it first and ask if theres something you arnt sure of

DO remember that people may not own the sire they should however own the dam be wary of people selling litters for which they have no parents, if they got the pup as pick of the litter for a stud fee they will have dad, if they are selling a puppy they have bought they should have no problems telling you who they bought it off and allowing you to contact them for info about the parents before you buy. i went to see an older cocker for sale, the owner said she didnt have details for the breeders but i managed to find out based on the dams affix, when i told her i had been in touch with the breeder she got very upset and it was clear that not all she was telling me was the truth, i didnt go back.

Do be careful of someone showing a different dam to the one who gave birth, up to 6 weeks after birth  the dam should have loose teats or show signs of feeding ie scratches and hairloss round her teats or have milk, she will also be in less than perfect condition due to the rigours of rearing a litter and in some cases may be extremly thin especially if the pups are 3-5 weeks old, she should still however be alert and be interested in her surroundings, be wary of a dam in tip top condition with no coat loss on their bellies
