THOMAS HART BENTON ART COMPETITION & SHOW

The 2008 Thomas Hart Benton Art Competitive and Show scheduled for October 11, 2008 at the Longwell Museum in the Elsie Plaster Center on the Campus of Crowder College south of Neosho continues to grow  Artists are coming from all over the Four State Region, many professional, because of the facility, the awards, and, always, a highly qualified judge.

This year we will have as our speaker, Michael S. Bell, Art consultant and Curator, giving tips on Getting Your Artwork Out There and Visible!  Mr. Bell ‘s work involves offering appraisals, expert testimony and career management for artists and collectors of Joplin, the Ozarks and Missouri. His presentation on Professional Presentation and Website Development will be of interest to all involved in art.  The presentation will be free to the public on Saturday at 10:00 AM.

Our Judge this year will be Malcom E. Kucharski, Associate Professor at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas.

The Competition Workshop and Exhibit is sponsored by the Southwest Missouri Art Alliance, formerly the Art Alliance of Neosho.  It exists solely due to the efforts of individuals who give of their time to volunteer once a year to make it happen along with the spring ART EXPO.  These volunteers come from area art organizations and include interested individuals, as well as financial supporters, who feel that the time is right for an across the board exhibit of regional art and interchange of these artists for the future artistic development of the area.

Our show will remain a two level show of Professional and Emerging Artists with three awards and numerous Merit Awards in each division plus a Best of Show and Artist’s Choice Awards overall.

The exhibit will be open to the public for a two-week period with a Opening Reception to be held Saturday, October 11, 2008 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., in the Longwell Museum.  The exhibit will be open on weekends from 1:00-4:00 PM. This year sale proceeds go 100% to the artists.

We encourage interested individuals to volunteer for this once a year activity.  It’s a lot of fun for all.

SMAA meets twice a year

The Southwest Missouri Art Alliance gathers twice yearly to bring together artists in the area and give them an opportunity to work together. It is "by artists, for artists," said Pam Leisenring, SMAA's Director.

In April 2007 the group gathered at the Art Expo held in Neosho, MO as part of the annual Thomas Hart Benton Festival. The event was intended to be a "Plein Air Experience" where the artists would paint outdoors but bad weather kept them indoors at the Lampo Building in Neosho.

Artist Julie Mayser displayed some of her pastel paintings and did a live demonstration using pastels. You can find her on the Web at http://www.ArtWanted.com/JulieMayser.
