The South Wales Cricket League was founded in 1999 firstly as The South East Wales League. In 2001 the League decided to change its name to the current title. In 1997 the ECB decided to develop Premier League Cricket across England and Wales.

In order to qualify for ECB grants and support all Clubs were expected to play within their own County Cricket Clubs Pyramid Structure. This brought together Clubs who had previously played in the Western League, Three Counties League, Welsh Counties Alliance and the Glamorgan and Gwent Conference to form the East Wales Pyramid Structure.Initially thirty Clubs went into the Premier League with three divisions of ten Clubs, the remaining Clubs formed the lower divisions known as the Welsh Club Cricket Conference (WCCC).

The Premier League initially played 100 over matches, in 2001 the Premier Division decided to increase to 110 over matches and as a result the League gained ECB Premier League Accreditation. In 2004 the Premier Division reverted to the 100 over format and as a result lost ECB Premier League Accreditation this was later reinstated when the ECB accepted the 100 over format. In 2004 the Premier Division was increased from ten to twelve Clubs.

Since its inception the League has been fortunate to enjoy the support and sponsorship of the Thomas,Carroll Group PLC and this support is greatly appreciated and the contribution of Mr John Moore is acknowledged and valued.
