Mrs Thompson is teaching the Science this term.

We did, however discuss 'Renewable Energy' in class recently.

Galaxies, The Milky Way and Black Holes

  • There are huge groups of stars in Space. They are called galaxies and they are like gigantic star-cities.
  • The Milky Way is the galaxy we live in. It is made up of all the stars you can see in the night sky and lots and lots of stars you can't see.
  • The Milky Way got its name because at night we can sometimes see part of it looking like a band of milky white light across the sky. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy.
  • Stars are not solid, instead they are made of gases like the air around us. The 2 main gases in stars are helium and hydrogen. They are the stars' fuel and they make heat and light from them.
  • A black hole can happen when a massive star dies. The star falls in on itself and in the end all that's left is a place light cannot escape from - a black hole.

  • Light is sucked into black holes in much the same way as water is sucked down a plug hole. A star that gets too close to a black hole is sucked into it. Nothing, not even the star's light can escape the pull of the black hole's gravity.

We also learned about the Internal Structure of the Earth.

Term One - Living Things

This area of Science was very much linked to our project on the Rainforest. Please have a look at our Rainforest page for some links to other sites and some details of what we learned about in Term One.

Here are some links to the Living Things Science section of the BBC web site. They each begin with an activity and then there is a quiz out of 10 - I wonder who can get 10/10 in all three!

The first one is on food chains, the second on plants and animals in the local environment and the last one is on 'variation'. We have been learning about these areas in class so you SHOULD know the answers!!

Good luck and let me know how you get on!
