Celebrating Success!

Welcome to our web site! This is an exciting venture by Primary 6/7 and Mrs Ferrier.

We are going to use this site to share our news with you and to let you know what we have been up to in the classroom!

Note from Mrs Ferrier 07/07/08

Well it is now 1 week into the holidays and I am sure everyone is enjoying some long lies.I just wanted to say thank you for the gifts I got at the end of term. It was very kind of you and much appreciated.
I will not be adding any more to this site, but feel free to let me know how you are getting on at High school with the odd message in the guest book. I get an email telling me when someone has signed it, so I would definitely get your messages. I may have a new site with my next class but I would let you know via the guest book. However, once you get settled into High School I don't think you will look back!!

Take Care, have fun and be good! Thank you again for being such a lovely group of children.

Congratulations to the netball A team who are now the proud owners of the Town Cup after winning all their matches. They worked hard and played really well, so they deserve their success.
Well done too, to the football A team who won the Danny Cormack cup. The score against Pulteneytown was 1 nil and the winning goal was scored by Jonathon.

Well done to P6/7 music making group who came 2nd at the festival. They had an impressive score of 86. Congratulations to the choir who came first with their 'Disco Beat'song. What a great achievement! Well done too, to P5/6 and P6/7 for taking part in the Popular song section. We were not in the top 3 but it was a big section of 10 and Mr Pearson and I were very proud of you all. I know you enjoyed taking part and it is another memory for the 7's to take away from Primary School. The gospel choir members were really cool dudes!

Choices for Life

Primary 7 went to a drugs roadshow in Inverness on Wednesday the 28th of May.We were entertained with videoclips, singers, a play and a game of Family Fortunes.

The message was very powerful - we are in charge of ourselves and we have to make the right choices. Everyone is faced with decisions and as the 7s move on to High School this is quite relevant to them.

They have to make the right decisions and say 'NO' to those who may try to persuade them to do something they know is wrong.

The singers who entertained us were:

Karen Danzig

Attic Lights

Keith Jacks (runner up in Joseph)

The MacDonald Bros.

It was a really great day out and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

I was on a language course recently and now have some new ideas for writing activities. Check out our Language page for our poems which were written as a whole class.

World War II Assembly - 2/5/08

Congratulations to everyone for a really good performance. The singing was good, you spoke out clearly and you looked very smart! I managed to get the slides right too, despite a bad rehearsal!!
I can't believe I forgot to bring in my camera! I'm really disappointed that we have no photos of you all looking so smart.  Never mind!

Celtic Games - 29/04/08
The P7's went to Pulteneytown Academy for a fun day of sports - better than school work! They had a chance to try out shinty, rugby and golf. We walked there and back and were all tired after a day out in the fresh air!

We had a great time at Hampden on March 19th. Check out our Hampden page for some of the highlights of our day!

Here is our prize winning poem:

A New Scotland

Scotland is changing,

we're welcoming new people in,

whose lives were fearful,

through war, killing and pain.

They need a home now,

a home that is peaceful.

They all need a chance,

to start again.

So make them welcome,

and be a friend to everyone,

and don’t be racist.

Help turn their everyday lives,

from dark to light,

for everyone’s equal.

Let’s hold up the red card

to racism!

Scotland is changing,

let’s celebrate our diverse land.

We’re all just the same,

colour, background, beliefs,

it doesn’t matter.

We just want to be happy,

so let’s all work together,

towards that aim.

Kimberley

We were all very sad wh   en Kimberley left recently. We will all miss her very much. Kimberley really is 'one in a million', such a kind, caring and lovely girl. As someone in class commented, "She never had a bad word to say about anyone!".

We were sad that we did not have much time to say goodbye and we didn't get the chance to have a leaving party! I was very touched and proud of the class when they suggested that we gave Kimberley our cuddly Violet orangutan. We wrote some poems and made some cards for her, which we sent off along with a little gift from the class. We wish her lots of love and luck for the future!

Shinty Session - 21/02/08
This was enjoyed by all and I was proud of the enthusiasm, excellent behaviour and effort put in by everyone. Well done!

Valentine's Disco 14/02/08

The disco went really well and was enjoyed by all.We did manage to fit in a 'Flying Scotsman' dance and some of us even had a slow dance at the end of the night!!!
The big teddy raffle was won by Scott in P2 but Kyle,William and Kimberley all won little prizes.

Blythswood Challenge

I am delighted and very proud to announce that South School has raised £238.82 for the Blythswood charity.

We did this as part of an enterprise challenge. We were given a cheque for £20 from Blythswood and had to use it to make as much money as we could. After some discussions with P5/6 and ourselves, it was decided to keep it simple and to do a few smaller activities. We had a month to do it in, but by the time we got organised, we actually had 2 weeks!

We decided on a raffle, guess the cat's birthday, guess the number of sweets in the jar and we also wanted to lay out a cross of coins on the floor. Children were chosen to be the treasurers and to go round the classes collecting their money and guesses. Some children from P5/6 were responsible for laying out the coins with us and then for counting it all up.

Mrs Bowers was so delighted with our efforts that she donated the commission from a candle party for staff, held at her house. I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for your efforts and for the money which was given. We had 12 lucky winners chosen at Wednesday's assembly. There were actually 302 sweets in the jar and the cat's birthday was the 1st of February.

 Miss Gulloch
We said goodbye recently to Miss Gulloch, our student teacher from Aberdeen University. We really enjoyed having her in our class and we have had some fun times together.

She worked with the children on all areas of the curriculum but I think she will be remembered most for her P.E. lessons! She is a gymnastics coach and she also loves Scottish Country dancing, so her P.E. lessons were thoroughly enjoyed by all! I plan to keep up the good work she started, even though my dancing skills are quite minimal!! I think there will have to be a 'Military Two Step' and a 'Flying Scotsman' dance at the Valentine's disco!
We would like to thank Miss Gulloch for her time with us and wish her good luck as she continues with her studies!

Joseph Production at Pulteneytown Academy 1/2/08

The whole school visited Pulteneytown Academy to see their dress rehearsal of 'Joseph'. It involved all the children from P4 - P7 and the story was told through songs. It was excellent and we were all very impressed with the singing, the outfits and the back drop.

World War 2
Our project this term is World War 2. We will be learning about lots of aspects of the war in class, but the children also have to complete a Personal Project on one area which they are particularly interested in. It is due to be handed in on the 10th of March. We have a new World War 2 page with some useful sites to save time searching the Internet - thank you to Miss Macgregor for spending time looking for them!

We have been listening to,and singing along with all the war time songs and are watching a series following some children who were evacuated. If anyone knows someone who could come in to the class to talk to the children about living through the war, please let me know.

Burn's Lunch 25/01/08
The children recited 'To a Haggis' at the recent Burn's lunch. They did really well and Kirsty Bain cut the haggis, while her sister Natalie played the bagpipes. Everyone enjoyed a lunch of either haggis or sausages.

Please take a look at our New Year Resolutions and the Christmas messages are still there for those who have not seen them.

Mrs Ferrier's comments -  Term Two

    Triple 'C' Star

We are delighted to announce that we have just named our very own star. We decided to do this after learning about stars and galaxies as part of our Science lessons this term.We all donated some loose change and then took the rest from our quiz profits.

After MUCH consideration and discussion we decided to name our star the Triple 'C' star, which stands for Class of Champion Children! We then decided that everyone could choose their own 3 'C's from such combinations as cool, clever children; caring, cheerful champions; crazy, considerate companions etc

The star is in the Hercules constellation and we have a chart and certificate to show us where we should look for our star in the sky. This star is named by us FOREVER, so the children will be able to tell their own children about it. I think it is a lovely thing to do and something a bit different and special for my Class of Champion Children!!

Christmas Concerts

The concerts went well with everyone doing their best! Our class had quite a long song but they did well, keeping the singing up while doing all the dance moves. They made up the moves themselves and made a good job of it!

Christmas Party -14/12/07

I really enjoyed the party and I hope the children did too! We had so much food brought in - thank you to the kind parents and guardians who supplied crisps and biscuits. A special thank you to those who baked, especially for the party. I was surprised at how little was actually eaten - I think they were too busy playing the games or else they had a big lunch!

The atmosphere was lovely in the class, the children are so funny and get on so well together. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for 2 very enjoyable terms. There is hardly a day goes by but we have a laugh and fun together! They do work hard as well and have had a lot of success! Keep it up next year, and make the most of your last few months in primary school, P7's !

Quiz

I think you will all be aware that we designed a quiz recently, which we sold to yourselves and members of the public. We raised the incredible sum of sixty pounds, which was a great achievement. We had 2 winners who received a small prize - Bev Lal (Alisha's mum) and Liam and Emma Bissett who entered together. Thank you to everyone who supported us and well done to the many people who got 20/20! We are going to take a small portion of the money to do something special and the rest will go into school funds.

Watoto Children's Choir - 13/12/07

We had a lovely afternoon when this choir of children entertained us. They are all orphans and they tour around raising money for orphanages in Uganda. They had such lovely happy faces and their singing and dancing was great! I was very touched by the children who gave some of the choir members their Christmas finger puppets. It was a lovely guesture and I was proud of them all!

Once upon a happy ever after - 7/12/07

We enjoyed a mini pantomime last Friday, which was written and performed by David Hunter (who we did a Play in a Day with) and his friend from Eden Court. It was very funny and entertaining!

Sally

We had a fun afternoon recently for Sally's last day - We have the photos to prove it! Poor Sally was very emotional but we tried hard to make her laugh - even jumping off chairs! Only joking Mrs Bowers!!

We will all miss Sally's smiley face  in class but wish her all the best for the future!

Shark Caught In Local Waters

When I was picking up Iona from the JAM club recently I noticed a lot of activity around the harbour. It turned out that a shark had been caught by a local fisherman and I managed to get a photo of it.

Children In Need 16/11/07

Well done to everyone who put a lot of effort into their outfits for Children in Need. I had to laugh in the afternoon when everyone was getting ready for cycle training - there were spotty faces, dressing gowns, cycle helmets and spotty tops - they were a very strange sight!!

Remembrance Day 11/11/07

Well done and thank you to William and Aalish who laid the poppy wreath on behalf of South School.

Happy Birthday to everyone whenever your birthday is!

What do you think of our new cloakroom display? We had to try to draw the other half of the celebrities and ourselves.
Some of the lighter pencil is difficult to see on the screen but it gives you an idea what our display is like!

Theatre Modo

We all enjoyed some workshops with Louise from Theatre Modo last week. Some of us took part in the parade on Saturday night (22nd September) It was good fun and we looked pretty cool!!

Here is a link to Caithness.org which has some photographs of the parade. The fiery finale ones are quite impressive!

Do you like our cloakroom display? We have been learning about camouflage in Science and how animals adapt to their environments. We each chose an animal to paint and research.

We also did some drawings and research on orangutans.

Check out our Rainforest page for some photographs of our classroom display!

Sponsors

Sponsor an animal

We have been saving our change from tuck and have been donating any spare change we have.We now have enough money and have sent away our application. We have chosen, by a majority vote (sorry to those who wanted a tiger!) to sponsor Violet, an orangutan. Here is a photograph of her. Isn't she adorable?

Violet is being looked after in a Care Centre in Borneo, after being rescued very close to death. Her mother was killed when she was less than a year old.

By adopting Violet we can help to provide her with loving long-term care, as she embarks on her slow journey back to the wild.

For the money we will receive

  • an adoption certificate with a colour photo of Violet
  • a copy of the DVD 'Orangutan the Forest Ape'
  • A Care World International window sticker
  • An orangutan fact sheet packed with information
  • An update on her progress after six months of adoption

Well done and thank you to everyone for being so kind!

Our adoption package has arrived and so has our cuddly Violet.

We all enjoyed this training session and have learned some skills which we hope we never have to use for real! We learned what to do if someone is choking, if someone is not breathing and if someone has a bleeding wound.
The lady who took this training was delighted with the children and commented that it was one of the best classes she has ever worked with.Mrs Ferrier was really delighted and very proud!

A Play in a Day  29/8/07

David Hunter from Eden Court came to school to work with our class. We had some fun and games and then got down to the hard work of putting a play together in a day. The play was entitled 'The Last Tree in Dunnett' and was written by George Gunn. The children performed well and put on a show for the rest of the school. Everyone enjoyed the day and they were all delighted that they had no maths or grammar!

A little poem for you to consider!

Children Learn What They Live

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.

If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.

If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy.

If children live with shame, they learn to be guilty.

If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient.

If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.

If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate.

If children live with fairness, they learn justice.

If children live with security, they learn to have faith.

If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.

If children live with acceptance and friendship, they learn to find love in the world.
