The Ramblings of a Mad Birder

Welcome to my site, I have been a keen birder since 1974, a reformed twitcher with a British list of 430 that has laid fairly static for over 10 years barring the odd lapse when the urge or the bird has been impossible to resist.

I have worked as Senior Warden at South Norwood Country Park since 1993, my patch list is a creditable 141 out of the 163 species that have been recorded since 1989.

South Norwood Park lies in the north east of the borough of Croydon and covers an area of over 45 hectares (115 acres). With a wide range of habitats, the country park is a haven for wildlife and an important site for nature conservation. It has now been designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Whatever the season, there is always something to see. Early mornings and evenings are often the best time to visit, although as always with patience, birds can be seen throughout the day. The site list stands at 177 with 163 of those recorded since the creation of the Country Park in 1989. The park is open to vehicles from 8.00am on weekdays and 9.00am on weekends and bank holidays until just before dusk. It is advisable to check the boards situated in the car parks and at the main entrance for the current times of locking. Pedestrian access is available at all times.

When I'm not at the Country Park, I can be found birding mainly in London or Kent. I bird abroad as much as I can, having visted France, Corsica, Portugal, Spain, Majorca, Canary Isles, former Yugoslavia, Sweden, Lesbos, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel (twice), Egypt, Morocco, The Gambia, Kenya, Goa (5 times), Kerala, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Canada (twice), Barbados, Cuba, Ecuador and lastly my favourite Costa Rica where I went  back to in April 2009 for the 3rd time.

More photos can be viewed as I downland them onto the photo gallery, please accept the quality for what they are as I dont pretend to be an expert photographer.  There are now over 250 photos on the photo album page.

During this fairly quiet time of the year I will be closing certain pages of the website for a revamp and overhaul to improve the quality
