Increasing Membership: GSA's are popping up in schools all over
Kamloops, and the SKSS GSA is thriving! However, many members will be graduating this year and it is our goal to spread the word to younger students wishing to keep the group alive
Spreading the word: Homophobia hurts! Phrases
like "that's so gay" or insults like "dyke" are commonplace among our youth and the SKS hallways. We aim to promote awareness that this is homophobic and a form of bullying, mainly through posters or other awareness spreading materials.
Same-sex coverage in
Sex-Ed: Sexual education is a crucial topic for teens, which is covered in a unit of Physical Education class. However, no mention is made to Safe sex for Same sex couples. We are not telling people to go out and have sex, but the reality is there are same sex couples in every school and safe sexual practices are an essential health tool for everyone!
Fiction covering GLBT in the library. This does not mean we want to stock the library with gay porn! However, the majority of all books deal with relationships, most of which offered here are heterosexual relationships. We don't wish to throw out het lit for "gay stories", but we would like to see a little more material dealing with same sex relationships in a healthy, appropriate manner for highschool-age children.
