Bio:
Billie is the youngest of six children. His father was a
jazz-musician and a Safeway truck driver while his mother was a waitress
at Rod's Hickory Pit. When Billie was 5 he would go to the hospital and
sing to the patients to cheer them up. The first song he recorded was
"Look For Love" under the record company Fiat Records. When he
was 11 he received "Blue" (the famous fender stratocaster) as
his last ever present from his father before he died of cancer. Billie
still uses Blue today and also has many replicas of it. His mother
continued to work at Rod's Hickory Pit and later on Billie and Mike would
become bus-boys there. When his mother remarried all of the children hated
this new man.
Billie met Mike in the cafeteria at school (in 1982) and when they slept around each others houses they would play rock metal classics by such people as Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard and Van Halen, they would get their other influences from the alternative music from the Bay Area culture from the 80's. There were a few local clubs (such as Mabuhay Gardens and Berkeley's 924 Gilman Street gave chances for local groups to perform and make a name for themselves. Billie's first song 'Why Do You Want Him?' was written when he was 14 which was about his step-father. At the age of 15 Billie and Mike found drummer John (aka Al Sobrante) and formed the band Sweet Children (their ep's are still available but are rare) and they played their first gig at Rod's Hickory Pit. The day before he was 18 Billie dropped out of school as he knew what he wanted was a career in music and that school was just getting in the way of Sweet Children which he was devoting all his time to. By this time Billie had gained the nickname "Two-Dollar Bill" as this referred to the joints he sold.
John left the band in 1990 to attend college thus making Billie and Mike find a new drummer. This is when they found the Gilman Street veteran that was Tré Cool who had been playing in The Lookouts since he was 12. They later renamed Sweet Children to what we know as Green Day. They were then traveling the world in a bookmobile that was driven by Tré's dad. While traveling they had little money and found themselves staying in fans houses. When they were in Minneapolis Billie laid eyes on his wife to be Adrienne Nesser. They were then dating for a while until they married on 2nd July 1994. The day after the wedding Adrienne found out she was pregnant and Joseph Marciano was born in March 1995. A few years later Jakob Danger joined them all (in 1998) and now all the Armstrong's live in Berkeley, California.
