PATRICK HALEY
Patrick Haley's 10-year photography career has captured both the glam and the grit of pop culture scenes on the West Coast and the East Coast. His work includes candid shots of iconic performers including Incubus, Deftones, Blink 182, Fugazi, Papa Roach, AC/DC, Radiohead, and Patti Smith just to name a few. His images portray what's on stage and what's off stage. A documentation, his collection of professional and personal photos are visual poetry- each photo a haiku of telling moments behind the many scenes of music, travel, and entertainment.
A California native, Patrick Haley began his career documenting the skate, surf, and punk rock scene in the late 1980's. He began taking pictures with an instamatic camera at age 12 until, on his 18th birthday, his mom gave him a 35mm camera and helped him smuggle it into a Neil Diamond concert at the Fabulous Forum in L.A. With his new camera Haley began furiously documenting the Southern California music scene.
Haley found more energy in his self-inspired efforts than in traditional education, despite winning numerous awards during his grade school days. By his early 20's he was busy getting booked for photo gigs and getting invited to tour with such bands as Deftones, Incubus, and Far in Europe which lead to photographing such events as the Ozz-Fest, Tibetan Freedom Concert, Van's Warped Tour and the X- Games respectively. At this point he reached an artistic and professional turning point in 1996 when he quit his 7-year job with a department store, packed a bag, and took a 5-day spiritual journey in the mountains, where he immersed himself in photos and journal writing. When he returned he decided to devote himself full-time toward photography and move to the east- to New York City.
The Jones Soda Company selected his snapshots to use for their bottle labels and Haley's images were found throughout the city. Another new friend hired him to shoot photos of the WWF wrestlers. New contacts at record labels started sending him on gigs in the music, entertainment, and fashion industries. Within a few years his schedule was fully booked with gigs that kept him busy from dawn to the early hours. He built a portfolio of published and credited photos for titles that included Rolling Stone, Spin, Strength, Heckler, CMJ Monthly, Hamptons Magazine, as well as the city's major record labels.
His own personal documenting efforts include private moments with such stars as Ed Norton, Jesse Camp, Hugh Hefner, and the band members of Papa Roach, Deftones, and Incubus. However, his favorite photos in his collection are those of the colorful characters and friends that he bumped shoulders with in downtown New York City since 1996.
