Neil Kendricks is a San Diego-based artist, filmmaker, photographer and writer who has been a fan of the local music scene since the late '80s. As an undergrad at the arts desk at The Daily Aztec, the college newspaper at San Diego State University, he has photographed the likes of Nirvana, U2, Henry Rollins, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Mazzy Star, Pere Ubu, Sonic Youth, the Cramps, Nitzer Ebb, and PIL, among others. Over the years, he has also taken pix of performances by the Smashing Pumpkins, Public Enemy, and other great bands.
These days, however, Kendricks is more focused on his short-film projects as he prepares to wrap up his graduate studies at SDSU's Theatre, Television & Film program. Several of his award-winning short films have screened at international film festivals including last year's Cannes Film Festival and the 2002 Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films.
Every once in a while (if he can get a photo pass), you might see this local art-lovin' music fan hanging at the periphery of the stage waiting for the perfect moment to materialize on stage. Although several of these photographs have been published in one form or another, this is the first, local public viewing of Kendricks' concert photography.
