Jonny Donhowe started out as a darkroom technician for TransWorld
Skateboarding Magazine back in 1989 working for J.Grant Brittain developing
Grant's film and printing his black and white photos. It was during this
period that Jonny started getting involved with bands, not only musically
(in bands like Olivelawn, fluf and Jalopy) but photographically as well.
Taking his camera to shows, he started photographing the bands that were
playing locally in San Diego. Influenced by what he was learning with skate
photography, he applied those techniques to them, not only trying to capture
the band live but photographing them in a way that captured the essence of
what the bands were all about.
This lead him to working with various bands, both local and non, as well
as, independent and major music labels and magazines such as Warp, Ray Gun,
and Spin.
In 1997, Jonny left the music industry behind (after the demise of
Jalopy) to focus soley on his skate photography working as the photo editor
and art director for Daily Bread Skate Magazine, which had started working
for a couple years prior. Although, it has been rumored that Jonny has been
seen at shows recently with a camera in his pocket, so who knows what to
expect in the future.
