View recent article in the Fairplay Flume about ongoing developments relative to the potential In Situ Leach Uranium Mining in South Park County. The article erred in the exact details between County authority and surface owner rights.  While a surface owner cannot just tell a company “no”, the county sure can, so long as their basis for doing so is to protect public health and the environment. Here's the link to the Fairplay Flume Article.  LINK

The SOSPW08 Meeting held on Dec. 6th was attended by over 25 people.  Cory Stephens from the U. S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, presented very informative Power Point presentation about the South Park Mineral studies that have been made in past years.  Many questions were addressed after the presentation.  Following this, Jeff Pasons, Senior Attorney for the Western Mining Action Project, gave an overview of the recently past legislation (HB1161) in Colorado, the rules making process, and some insights on the rights that landowner have when dealing with minerial rights and mining entities that have staked claims on the owner property.

Follow the two presentation, the DVD presenting the SOSPW08 position and case opposing in situ leach uraninum mining in South Park was made available.  The DVD has been mailed out to those individual requesting a copy.  The cost to offset the DVD production and mailing is $10.00 a copy.

Cory Stephens later emailed the following links to much of the information that he presented at the Dec. 6th. meeting

A very important meeting initiated by SOSPW08 took place on Sept. 5th.  SOSPW08, TAC, CARD, Westen Mining Action Project, Trout Unlimited, met with Harris Sherman the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resouces along with Rebecca Swanson, the Senior Policy Analyst representing Gov. Bill Ritter's office.  We presented our thoughts and concerns about the rules / regulations process that will define the implementation aspects in HB 1161.  Our involment was encouraged by the Director and He indicated that we would be kept informed on the scheduled events that are pending. The sense of the meeting was that this was going to be a though process and that it would require our upmost diligence to prevail.

The Aug. 30th meeting was well attended and attendee's were given an update on what has transpired in the last two months and what is up coming.  The DVD was viewed and given a thumbs up review.  A voice over text feature will be added to the DVD as the first modification prior to its first release.  Other suggestions that were made will be incorporated later.

GOVERNOR RITTER TO SIGN HB-1161 ON TUESDAY, May 20th

Now we’re gearing up for the rule-making process that the State of Colorado will go through to implement our new legislation. The legislation is great! But without strong rules, it won’t be effective in protecting our water, people, and land. For example, the rules will get down to the nitty gritty and define exactly what a “violation” is and exactly when water is clean enough.

!!!Great News!!!

What's next for HB-1161?  The bill goes to the House for acceptance of the Senate amendments.  If accepted by the House, HB-1161 will be sent to Governor Ritter.  He may sign the bill, veto it, or let it become law without his signature.  The Governor has publicly stated his support for HB-1161.

South Park in Park County Colorado is a uniquely beautiful area in the central part of Colorado.  Many have chosen to live in South Park full time and many others have bought property here for recreational uses, summer retreats, investment properties, future home site, and a myriad of other reasons.  (There are literally thousands of five acre lots or larger that are privately owned in Park County and most of these are in South Park.  We vehemitly urge all Park County Officials, especially the County commissioners to support this grass roots effort to save South Park from this pending mining fiasco.)

It is very unlikely that any of these individual property owners ever thought or imagined that an outside entity with no vested interest in the long term well being of South Park's environment, habitat, water quality, or human health hazards would come here to mine for Uranium.  Mining Laws in Colorado that date back from 1872, which were structured to giving mining the first priority in land use, have set the stage for a confrontation between Mining interests and the interests of full time South Park Residence and individual property owners from all over the United States.  It is inconcievable  that a Mining Company and its stockholders, citing these 1872 Law, would be given the legal authority to come onto a person's property, drill dozens of wells, ravage the property surface, compromise the water quality under the property and surrounding areas, and to add insult on top of injury, leave radioactive contamination under the ground, on the ground, in the atmosphere, and surrounding areas for miles.

This mining company is only interested in extracting a mineral commodity, processing it, and profiting its stockholders and its executives.  Concern for the South Park community is a low priority for them and they will appease and assure everyone that there is nothing to be concern about and that everyone will benefit.  When the Uranium mining operations that have taken place in the USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, RUSSIA, EUROPE, are examined, the end results are profits for the mining entities and devastated land and water left in there aftermath.  (see last paragraph below for examples in USA)

We must not resign to the powers and forces behind the mining industry. We must unite and protect the Environment of South Park, its aquifers, its water quality, its habitats, and our personal property investments.  We must let these mining interest know that we don't need or welcome their profit seeking ventures at our expense.  We must insist that our County elected officials, State elected officials, and those appointed in various governmental agencies be sensitive and accountable to the will of the people they represent.

Typical examples for the incidents occuring during business as usual at in-situ operations, including surface spills and underground solution excursions, can be found here: Christensen Ranch (Wyoming), Highland (Wyoming), Smith Ranch (Wyoming), Crow Butte (Nebraska), Kingsville Dome (Texas), Rosita (Texas), Bruni (Texas), Beverley (South Australia)
