Bio
In 1998 Underoath was created by Dallas Taylor (former lead singer) in the sunny state of Flordia. Along with Tim McTague, Aaron Gillespie and Christopher Dudley Underoath signed a deal with Tooth & Nail records in 2002. On year later, during a long summer on the road with Warped Tour, Dallas abruptbly left the group leaving them without a singer. Soon after Spencer Chamberlain (former member of This Runs Through) joined the band along with Grant Brandell and James Smith, all of which added a new sound to Underoath. 2004 proved to be their year with the release pf their first full length album 'They're Only Chasing Safty' which sold close to 100,000 copies. Then in 2006 they released another album 'Define The Great Line' which proved to be their best work to date.
Exerpt from an interview with Underoath about their newest album "Define the Great Line" (Interview by Crossfire.com)
There is and always has been (to an extent) a lot of controversy surrounding you and religion, especially as youre on Tooth and Nail, which is known to host, for the most part, a highly influentially Christian roster how much of a difference do you think your religion has on your music and its desired effect?
Aaron: Well yeah, we are Christian but
Spencer: In a different way. Were not like your average Christian band. Most of us dont agree with the American view and handling of Christianity because its lost its appeal and meaning. People use the church more for social reasons than religion.
Aaron: If you say the word religion its like a man-made term
Spencer: It turns into a scheduled thing where you have to do everything at a certain time. People that follow that end up really judgemental and thats not at all what were about. We use our music to show that theres more to it and that you dont have to be that way to believe in something.
Would you agree that your beliefs are the backbone of your writing?
Spencer: Its the backbone of our lives, especially in the way that we handle certain things, but its not so much the backbone of our lyrics. Its not like every song is a lesson from the Bible or something. Its just normal life struggles.
Aaron: However you live, thats what youre going to write about. This is how we live and we write around that.
Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape
I heard a voice through the discord
Of a deluge of passersby.
I saw one gaze frozen in time
Watching me passing by.
I swear I'll know your face in the crowd,
And I'll hear your voice so loud
When you're whispering...
Hey unfaithful I will teach you
To be stronger, to be stronger.
Hey ungraceful I will teach you
To forgive one another.
Here's my kiss to betray
Desperate to brush the lips of grace.
Do you feel hollow when you think of how I've lied?
Oh sweet angel of mercy with your grace like the morning
Wrap your loving arms around me.
Oh sweet angel of mercy with your grace like the morning
Wrap your loving arms around me.
Hey unfaithful I will teach you
To be stronger, to be stronger.
Hey ungraceful I will teach you
To forgive one another.
Hey unfaithful I will teach you
To be stronger, to be stronger.
Hey unloving, I will love you,
I will love you, I will love you.
Hey unloving
I will love you
Jesus I'm ready to come home.
