Grand Junction, CO –– A Soldiers Angels rep will be supporting the 2008 Homeless Veterans Stand Down on October 24, 2008. The Stand Down, which occurs annually, is organized by Bethany Hall at the Mesa County Workforce Center and includes participants from the Grand Junction Veteran’s Medical Center, VFW Post 1247, local TV station KREX, the National Guard Armory, the Patriot Guard, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Marillac Clinic and many more. Soldiers Angels is a new participant this year.
Veterans who can present either a DD214 or VA card will receive priority attention in the morning, and their families are able to participate in the afternoon. At past Stand Downs, all people presenting themselves have received services. The committee expects to provide services for 125 to 200 homeless veterans and their families.
Services or items they will receive include flu and pneumonia shots; phone cards and bus passes; DOD surplus clothing and Comfort Packs (personal hygiene).
Information resources present will include the Grand Junction Veteran’s Medical Center to answer questions on SSI/DI and Military Benefits; the Mesa County Workforce Center to register interested people for job services; a Pro Bono Project representative to answer legal questions; a Sheriff’s Department staff person, in street clothes, to answer questions about safe areas and local do’s and please do not’s.
Additional services that the committee hopes will be provided include eye care, medical exam, hair cuts, and foot care.
Food service will include a hot lunch with beef brisket, beans, and slaw. Box lunches will also be provided.
Soldiers Angels is providing a small donation to increase the food service budget, various supplies like tents and tables, and helping hands.
