The SHA's meetings generally cycle between Greenwich, Cambridge, Oxford and Birmingham, with noted visits to Manchester (returning in 2008) and Bath for Joint Meetings with other Societies.
As a rule, the SHA's year includes a Joint Meeting, AGM & Spring Conference, Summer Picnic and Autumn Conference, the latter normally at the Birmingham & Midland Institute.
Council meets several times each year and is also closely linked by email.

At the Blackett Observatory,
Marlborough College, Wiltshire, SN8 1PA
Founded in 1843, and situated in one of the most attractive market towns in the country, Marlborough College is a flourishing and fully coeducational, independent boarding school for pupils aged between thirteen and eighteen. It is a remarkable school in an evocative and unique setting, with easy access to the M4 Motorway*. The Blackett Observatory within the school grounds houses an operational 10” Refractor originally supplied to Joseph Gurney Barclay’s Observatory at Leyton (see Antiquarian Astronomer Issue No 3 ‘Joseph Gurney Barclay and the 1860 10” Cooke Refractor’ – by Charles Barclay).
· Arrive at 1pm on Parade Ground Car Park - signed off the A4.
· Welcome in Ellis theatre - signed from Car Park.
· Drive/walk up to Observatory for your Picnic (depending on weather) and tour of the telescope dome. Solar viewing if possible.
· Return to Ellis theatre for talk by Charles Barclay on the renovation of the telescope.
· Please bring along your own picnic and drinks – no additional refreshments will be provided.
NB. Formal tickets are not being issued for this event, but attendees are asked at their discretion to make a small donation on the day towards the upkeep of the Observatory.
*Marlborough College is to be found on the A4 about 1/2 mile west of Marlborough, Wiltshire, and 8 miles south of Junction 15 of the M4. Take the Junction 15 exit from the M4 onto the A346 to Marlborough. In Marlborough follow the A4 westbound (signed Bath, Calne) into the High Street. Proceed down the High Street until you reach the mini-roundabout by the church. Turn right at this roundabout (Master’s Lodge is straight ahead) and follow the road round the corner, under the bridge. The College’s main entrance is immediately on your left.
