History

The Region’s history is really unique. There is no place of more interest from the viewpoint of historical and cognitive tourism.  Anapa is one of the oldest towns in Russia. Its age is over 2500 years. Scythes lived here, as well as ancient Greeks, and Romans, and Vikings, and Rousses, and Genoa’s dwellers, and Turks. The colony of ancient Greeks here in Anapa several times exceeded the famous Troy discovered by the German archeologist Schliemann. Many of the ancient Greek myths (about the Amazons, Heracles, Prometheus, Hades, Argonauts) are connected with Anapa. The North of the Black Sea Region is the fore-motherland of Russians. Location

Anapa is situated at the place where the steppes of Taman meet the foreland of the Great Caucasus and the Black Sea. Variety of landscapes, flora and fauna make recreation in Anapa interesting even if you come here ten and more years successively. Thanks to this phenomenon you will find only in Anapa such wonderful sand beaches that cannot be found in any other city of the Russian coast from Novorossiysk to Adler, nor in the Crimea (or any other region in Europe). Modern highly developed infrastructure (the airport of Anapa, its bus station, railway station and sea passenger station) make Anapa the heart of the region. Being on vacation in Anapa you can go for an excursion or by car to the Taman Peninsular, The Sea of Azov, the Crimea, the cities of Gelendjik and Sochi.

The location of Anapa preconditions the unique mixture of dry climate of steppes, the Mediterranean climate and mountain climate (the beginning of the Great Caucasus).  Anapa is the most sunny sea resort in Russia. Our tradition of wine industry (it is often called the Adygea’s one or the Abkhazia’s one) is the oldest and the richest one. Quite new and unknown culture of  wine  making was  formed  in the territory of modern Krasnodar region. Of course it is  based on  general rules  of wine  making and ancient traditions of local vinedressers. At  the same time  most of the  local wine plants use technologies designed by Soviet  scientists. This makes the local wines  unique liquids  which can be tasted only during the visit to Kuban wine plants.

Sochi (Russian: Сочи) is a Russian resort city, situated in Krasnodar krai just north of the southern Russian border. It sprawls along the shores of the Black Sea against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. At 147 km, Greater Sochi is claimed to be the longest city in Europe.^[1] As of the 2002 Census, it had a population of 328,809, down from 336,514 recorded in the 1989 Census. The city has been selected to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.^[2]

History

From the 6th to the 15th centuries the area successively belonged to the Christian kingdoms of Egrisi and Abkhazia who built a dozen churches within the city limits. The Christian settlements along the coast were destroyed by the invading Gokturks, Khazars, and other nomadic empires whose control of the region was slight. The northern wall of an 11th-century Byzantinesque basilica still stands in the district of Loo.

From the 15th century the coast was controlled by the local mountaineer clans, nominally under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire. It was ceded to Russia in 1829 as a result of the Russo-Turkish War.

In 1838, a fort of Alexandria, renamed Navaginsky a year later, was founded at the mouth of the Sochi river to protect the area from Circassian incursions. During the Crimean War the garrison was evacuated from Navaginsky in order to reinforce active forces. The fort was rebuilt in 1864 under the name of Dakhovsky, or Dakhovsky Posad (as it became known in 1874). In 1896, the settlement acquired its present name, derived from the local Sochi River. Town status was granted to Sochi in 1917.

From 1918 to 1919 the town and its environs saw sporadic armed clashes involving the Red Army, White movement forces and the Democratic Republic of Georgia. Sochi was established as a fashionable resort area in the years of the Soviet Union when Joseph Stalin had his favourite dacha built in the city; Stalin's study, complete with a wax statue of the dictator, is now open to the public.[1]

Climate

Sochi has a surprisingly warm climate for the latitude; winter temperatures rarely fall much below freezing. The average summer high temperature ranges between +26 °C (78.8 °F) and +32 °C (89.6 °F) with occasional extreme heat in some interior locations exceeding +40 °C (104 °F).

Resort

The resort has the warm climate, averaging +7 °C (44.6 °F) in January and February, and boasts many sanatoria and mineral baths. There are also tea plantations, the most northerly in Europe. The permanent population is about 315,400 (2004) but thousands more arrive each summer, when the city is home to the annual film festival "Kinotavr" and the vacation place of Russian leaders. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, sprawls just north from the city.

Apart from the majestic Caucasus Mountains, pebbly and sand beaches, Sochi attracts vacation-goers with its subtropical vegetation, numerous parks, monuments, and extravagant Stalinist architecture. The local markets are made primarily of kiosks grouped together in areas with pavilions and more permanent larger structures. The city is served by the Adler-Sochi International Airport.

Sports facilities

Sochi is also known for its sport facilities: a local tennis school spawned the careers of such notable players as Grand Slam champions Maria Sharapova and Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Kafelnikov spent much of his childhood here, while Sharapova relocated to Florida at the age of 7). In late 2005, the Russian Football Union announced that it was planning to establish a year-round training centre for the country's national teams in Sochi. The city's warm climate was cited as one of the main incentives.

2014 Winter Olympics

In June 2006, IOC president Jacques Rogge announced that Sochi had been selected as a finalist city to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. On July 4, 2007, Sochi was announced as the host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, defeating Salzburg, Austria and PyeongChang, South Korea.^[3]

In contrast to what was perceived as a lukewarm bid by Russia for Moscow to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, the Russian government has committed to a $12 billion investment package, shared 60-40 between the government and private sector.

Environmental organisation Greenpeace has objected to Sochi being a candidate, because, according to Greenpeace, several of the planned sport resorts are located in natural reserves.^[4]

This will be Russia's first time hosting the winter Olympic Games and second time hosting an Olympic Games (1980 in Moscow when Russia was part of the Soviet Union).

Social and Municipal Problems of Sochi

Even though Sochi constantly grows and expands, there is significant number of ineradicable problems, which government was not able to take care of for decades now. Some of them include:

• Regular and annual shortage of electricity, which leaves buildings without power for several days
• Regular and annual shortage of cold(drinking) and hot water in homes, usually during winter
• Poor road conditions throughout most city; once broken, road are rarely rebuild
• Very poor building maintenance, especially 70+ year old buildings
• Close location to politically unstable Abkhazia and Chechen Republic, with significant number of suspected terrorists and high probability of terrorist attacks
• High number of illegal immigrants and criminal leaders from the Caucus region and neighboring republics
• Significant influence of local criminal groups on government and cities economy, as well as drugs and weapons traficing
• Deep-rooted corruption in most levels of government, especially at municipal level, which allows criminal groups to thrive
• High social inequality
• Low quality of services provided
• Few available public beaches in Central Sochi and their poor maintenance (ex: no life guards, lots of garbage, etc.)
