Soap Me Down, Mutha!

Calais to Prague in a 50 quid Saab

Introduction

The key to a good route is to get a good balance of roads. Street Safaris are about driving, after all. CRX2006 will take in a couple of Swiss passes and the superb Stelvio Pass in Italy.

Most days there will be a challenge. These challenges are currently being dreamt up by those cunning people at Street Safari. Usually in alcohol fueled drinking sessions. Things seem so much easier to work out after four pints. Or so.

The rally starts in Calais on 1st September 2006 and finishes outside Prague on the 4th September 2006.

Check-in of pre-registered teams takes place on Thursday 31st August 2006 in the evening.

We're staying in the delightful Calais Formule 1 Hotel which looks like it's a high-class establishment by anyone's standards!

Day 1 - 1st September 2006 - Calais to Annecy

The warm up is the run down to the beautiful town of Annecy in France. We will be staying in Le Rochers Blanc mountain top hotel for the night.

Annecy borders Switzerland and is called the French Venice due to the canals that run through the middle of the town.

This is a long run of around 520 miles, so don't hang around.

The challenge may well be an observation challenge so that you don't stop too much.

The key is to get to the end of the day in decent time.

Day 2 - 2nd September 2006 - Annecy to Bormio

Today you get to see Switzerland, heading over Simplon Pass. The day will be very hard going on the cars. On a scale of 1 out of 10 (10 being the hardest) this day will be 7. Plan accordingly.

This is a long day, so again don't hang around. Repairs need to be quick.

Brakes and clutches are important during this day. The passes are unforgiving and you certainly don't want brake failure. If you car is having trouble on this day then you will have serious problems on Day 3.

The evening is in Bormio in Italy just below Stelvio.

Day 3 - 3rd September 2006 - Bormio to Salzburg

Today you get to climb over the one and only Stelvio Pass.

This is very hard on your car. We are talking 10/10 on the difficulty scale.

The east side of Stelvio will be very hard on the brakes.

Check out this video of a loon tackling the pass from 2003.

If you are having any problems at this point consult with the organisers to find an alternate route.

The day ends just outside Salzburg.

Day 4 - 4th September 2006 - Salzburg to Prague

Easy day today taking the back roads of the former Czechoslovakia into Prague. This promises to be a very different day as we will be driving through old towns.

Oooooold towns.

The roads should prove interesting. Definitely different so we've been told.

The day shouldn't be too long, so you should be able to get into Prague in reasonable time. However, don't hang around if you can avoid it!

The end is in sight. Your car should be happy. And we bet you will be too!
