I got my precious Xiao Xiao in July of 2001. She is a pure bred Pekingese. Her name is pronounced "show show" (as in shower) and it means "little one" in Chinese. She only weighed about 3 lbs in this picture and now weighs about 8 pounds. She was 8 years old on May 26, 2009!
I cannot tell you how much joy she has brought into my life. My mother passed away on June 12, 2001 and this sweet dog helped me get over my grief and loss much quicker than I would have otherwise. You can't help but smile when you see her and she has gotten more endearing to me and to my family every day.
Candy is my 2nd dog. I got her the night before Thanksgiving, 2003. She was a puppy mill dog and I got her from a rescue group. She was rescued as a Pekingese, but we think she is part Peke and part Tibetan Spaniel. She weighs twice as much as Xiao Xiao. Her first 2 years were spent in a cage and she had never been socialized or loved as a pet. When I first got her she was so scared and skittish that it took at least 2 people to just catch her to hold her. After lots of loving and working with her, she is now my best buddy and is near me almost all the time, especially when I'm online. She usually lays right under my chair or next to me.
Candy does have some medical issues, most likely from the way she was treated early on. She has seizures occassionally and is on meds for that and had some other tummy/bowel problems the first months we had her, but she is worth every effort and is the sweetest little girl.
I cannot say enough about the people who rescue dogs. They have the biggest hearts and rank high in my opinion! Thank you Joy Dunham for all you do for these beautiful dogs!
