Smoky's Harbor Rabbitry

Purchasing Your First Set of Rabbits

If you want a rabbit for showing, the last place to look at is the pet store. I made that mistake when I got Prince and Isabelle. I was looking for a rabbit for 4-H and I called the local pet store. They said they had three Netherland Dwarfs. When I arrived, they were no Netherland Dwarfs-they were Dutch. Prince was show quality but not very good showing. He had serious faults. He cost $30 from the pet store and Isabelle, at that time was a kit, only 10 weeks old. She was $40 and not show quality at all. She was for my sister. I got Prince for 4-H and when I joined 4-H, I met more and more rabbit breeders. I found out that Prince's value was probably $10-$15. If I had gotten him from a breeder, he would have cost around $10. That was a huge lesson for me.

So the best thing to do is to try and locate a breeder in your area. You could talk to your 4-H leader or if you aren't in a 4-H group, you could go on the internet and go to google.com, you could type down the breed you want and where it's located. So if you are looking for a Dutch breeder, type down "Dutch Rabbits for Sale in Washington" in the search box. Google should provide you with a list of rabbitries that are located in your area.
