Basic Care for a rabbit It's really easy to take care of a rabbit. A rabbit is easier than a cat and a dog because they do not require annual shots or vaccinations. A rabbit is a very sanitary animal, it needs to stay clean to stay healthy (we all need to but a rabbit is more demanding). It's easier to keep a rabbit in a wire cage because then the waste would drop right to the bottom, through the wire. That prevents the rabbit from sitting in its own waste. So make sure that you clean the cage at least once every week (depends on how large the cage is and how large the rabbit is). I clean my rabbitry once every week. One very important thing is feeding. For me, I always feed my rabbits fresh food. I always dump out whatever is left in the food bowl, no matter how much food there is. Stale food isn't very appealing to a rabbit so I always make sure there is fresh food for my rabbit. Also I clean out my rabbit's water bowl everyday. I scrub it so it's sparkling clean and ready for fresh water. For some of my rabbits who have water bottles, I fill the water bottles all the time and never let it go below halfway. Weekly, I drain the water bottle and clean the inside with HOT water. After I make sure the water bottle is very well rinsed, I fill it up again with drinking water and put it back in the cage. If you want more information on caring for a rabbit or on diseases and stuff for rabbits, I strongly suggest you either join ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association). You can join by clicking here. If you join, you get a free book called "Raising Better Rabbits & Cavies" or if you don't want to join ARBA, you can still buy it for $10. Click here to buy the book. The link also leads to other items for sale too. The information provided is just basic information. It is recommended that you learn about diseases, parasites and other blemishes that can harm your rabbit. The reason for that is because rabbits are at the bottom of the food chain so they hide their illnesses well until it's too late. A good rabbit owner who knows his stuff will be able to notice differences in his rabbit in time. |
