Guinea Pig Health Check

It is important that you check you Guinea Pig at least once or twise a Day, as Guinea Pigs like to hide illness, so its best to keep a close eye on them.

If you feel that your Guinea Pig has come down with an Illness, then it is advised that you visit the vet as soon as possible to prevent any further problems.

The Health Check

Eyes:

Check your Guinea Pigs eyes- if they the Guinea Pig it Healthy they should be clear and bright, free of any discharge. If you see a milky substance then this is normal for a Guinea pig, as it is produced when they groom them selves, and is normally wiped away with their front teeth.

Ears:

Check your Guinea Pigs Ears: They should be warm to the touch and free of any wax build up. DO NOT poke a cotton down you Guinea Pigs ear, as this could cause damage inside your Guinea Pigs ear. The Ears should be smooth and non scruffy. If your Guinea Pig has an ear infection, it will walk holding its head to one side, looking very strange. If this happens you Guinea Pig needs to see the Vet as soon as possible.

Teeth:

The Teeth should meet evenly, and should not be over grown. Your Guinea Pig should be eating normally, if not then its likely that the teeth are over grown. If they are not eating, then they need to see a Vet who may need to cut them. Hay and chewing sticks can prevent this.

Feet:

The Guinea Pigs feet should be pink at the bottom, with no signs of any cuts etc. The Nails should'nt be too long, or this will cause the Guinea Pig Pain. The Nails should'nt be bleeding. Visit the Nail Clipping & Grooming page for more details.

Body:

The body should have no signs of fur loss, the Guinea Pig should have a nice healthy coat which is relativly clean. The Guinea Pig's backside should be free of discharge that has matted the Guinea Pig's fur. If this has happned then your Guinea Pig may be ill. There should be no wounds or scabs on the skin.
