Where are the records?
If you have ever wondered why it is hard to trace the history of the name Sloyan there is good reason. Only twelve out of twenty-five Roman Catholic parishes in Mayo have baptismal registers which date back to 1840 or before. In fact in most cases the earliest records available are circa 1860. In the case of the name Sloyan, it appears that the earliest baptismal record is that of a "Mary Sloyan" in 1865. Click here for details

War Hero
Private James J Sloyan (201837)  of the East Lancashire Regiment, 2nd/4th Battalions, was killed in battle on  21/03/1918 at The Somme. His remains rest at the Pozieres Memorial at Somme, France (Panel 42 & 43). Click here for details. I would be interested to know if he has surviving relatives. Please drop me a line if you know.

Hero!
There is a hero amongst us. According to the Australian Honours website www.itsanhonour.gov.au, John Anthony Sloyan, a member of crew of a rescue helicopter was awarded an honour for bravery along with fellow 3 other members of the helicopter crew for their actions whilst saving the crew of a yacht that had been damaged in storms during the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 1998. In winds up to 70 knots and waves over 70 feet they managed to rescue 8 stricken yaghtsmen. Doesn't that make you feel proud?

And yet another hero!
Garry Sloyan, a Leading Seaman in the Canadian Navy along with his fellow crew members was cited "for outstanding professional performance of duty during diving operations on the wreckage of Swissair Flight 111 leading directly to the recovery of human remains and the cockpit voice recorder".

Sloyan's in Politics?
Just discovered Sloyan's in Armenia of all places! It appears that in 1999 there were Regional Assembly Elections in Armenia and no less than 4 Sloyan's stood as candidates in 4 seperate councils . Temur Sloyan - Kamo Sloyan - Lyudvig Sloyan & Khdr Sloyan all stood for election in the Armenian region of Armavir. Sadly, none of them was elected on the day... but who knows... there may be a "President Sloyan" some time soon?

Deep Space....Star Trek etc...
Lots of Sloyan's made the arduous journey from Ireland to the USA and some have even gone as far as Australia to settle, but I think actor James Sloyan can claim to be the record holder having travelled through space and time with the crew of Star Trek Click here for details
