The Jack Petchey Foundation was established by the successful East London entrepreneur, Jack Petchey, in 1999. It is a young, progressive grant making Trust based in Ilford Essex. It is now among the largest and most influential London charitable foundations. It focuses on projects and programmes that benefit 11-25 year olds.  Jack Petchey wants the Achievement Awards scheme to recognise “Extreme endeavour and to help people to help themselves”.

What is the Gold Scheme Achievement Award?

·         The scheme will enable Sutton Little League Football to recognise the effort, endeavour and achievement of young people in a practical and positive way

·         From January 2009 it will provide additional funds for Sutton Little League through 9 monthly awards per year with each award being worth £200.

·         Sutton Little League Football will also be able to nominate an adult to win a Jack Petchey Foundation Leader Award which will allow SLL to apply for a small grant to develop a specific project with young people.

How it works

Each month, through a nomination and voting process, we will select one young person to receive an Achievement Award.

The month’s winner receives a framed certificate, badge and a cheque (payable to Sutton Little League) to be spent for the benefit of the league (based on a wish list which is created by the players, managers and officials of the league).

Award winners are entitled to receive a boxed Achievement Award Medallion which will be presented at an annual awards ceremony.

Cheques, frames, certificates etc. are provided by the Jack Petchey Foundation.

A young person or adult must not receive more than one award during their time at SLL.  The award should be given to ONE person.  It should not be a joint or group award.

How to Nominate

Nominations must be received by around the 10th of every month.  A nomination form can be completed and posted in the Nomination Box in the garage at Royston Park or sent by email to michelle.hodge1@btinternet.com.  You can download a form by clicking on the link above.

Every nomination must include:

  • The name of the person you wish to nominate
  • The name of the person making the nomination
  • Whether you are a player, manager, parent etc
  • The reason for your nomination
  • Please remember: To win an award the nominee must be aged between 11 – 25.  They do not need to be the cleverest, the fastest or the best looking!  But they need to be exceptionally hard working or have done something really positive for other people.

Once all the nominations have been received the details will be put on the website and on a notice board at Royston Park.

How to Vote

Each team will have one vote.  Your manager will discuss with you the nominations on the first Saturday following the closing date for nominations.  Every player will get to vote for their favourite nominee and whoever receives the most votes within your team will get your teams vote.  Your manager will need to advise your decision to sllf@live.com by around the 24th day of the month so that the presentation to the winner can take place the following Saturday.

The Winner

The winner will receive a framed certificate, badge

and a presentation cheque for £200.00 together with

a wish list.  From the wish list the winner can choose

how ‘their’ money will be spent. At an annual awards

ceremony they will also receive a boxed Achievement

Award Medallion.  The winners name will be posted on

the website and on the notice board at Royston Park.

A whole selection of fantastic ideas has been suggested.  Each months award winner can choose to spend their money on the following:

Winners

WINNER FOR DECEMBER 2009
Josh McIntosh
Josh has played at Sutton Little League since the Bantams and despite having the option of playing for his school he shows great loyalty to SLL. As Captain of Wanderers he leads by example and although his best position is striker he regularly sacrifices himself for the team to play wherever he's most needed. He is a great player to work with, has a great attitude, always gives 100% and never gives his managers any problems.

WINNER FOR NOVEMBER 2009
Liam Davenport
Liam is the Angels goalkeeper. Liam has been at SLL for some years now and he always gives his all, he has a tremendous attitude to football and over the years his goalkeeping has improved immensely, due mainly to Liam's own willingness to learn and his enthusiasm for the game.

WINNER FOR OCTOBER 2009
Jonathan Owusu-Boadi

Jonathan is one of the older members of Rovers' squad and he has demonstrated a really good attitude in training and in all the friendlies and matches played so far this season. He sets a very good example to other members of the team, he is well behaved, polite and always gives his best, regardless of the position he is asked to play.

WINNER FOR SEPTEMBER 2009
Adam Holmes

Adam Holmes plays for the lions in the senior league. He was recently made team captain and has made a terrific start with team morale, organisation and setting a great example! For example, he played out of position recently and instead of moaning he took responsibility and put in a man of the match performance.

WINNER FOR JUNE 2009
Ross Williamson
Ross is a colourful character and 100% dedicated to football.  Throughout a difficult season for the Blues, Ross has remained happy and optimistic and has always been the first to encourage his team mates.  Ross has been standing in as goalkeeper which can be a thankless task, but always stays positive and has a general all round superb attitude.

WINNER FOR MAY 2009
Terry Carlin

Terry has grown up with SLL and is now a great player who has worked very hard on his football and temperament.  He has proved himself to be an inspirational leader both on and off the pitch.  He has recently been given a trial at Chelsea but has kept his feet firmly on the ground.

WINNER  FOR  APRIL 2009
Levi  Choutan

Levi has had an outstanding first season in the Inters Division. Despite being deaf and playing with hearing aids, Levi has been a consistently strong performer and attended every match and nearly every training session also.  He always plays with a smile on his face, even when he’s had to be played out of position, he has always knuckled down and given 100%. He has a cheeky sense of humour and consistent performances have made him an invaluable member of the team.

WINNER FOR MARCH 2009
Steven Long

Steven is the trainer of the Vixens girls team.  He is only 16 years old, reliable and totally dedicated to the team.  He has never missed a training session or game and the manager of the Vixens, Kim West, wanted his enthusiasm and committment rewarded.  Wish List Choice: TBA

WINNER FOR FEBRUARY 2009
Courtney Nightingill

Courtney has been with the girls league since the early days and has always given 110% at training and in matches.  Sadly she has just injured her knee which means she will miss the rest of the season and may also have to miss the Girls National Tournament in May.  Get well soon Courtney!

WINNER FOR JANUARY 2009
Alex King

Alex plays for the Blues in the Inters Division.  Alex has been with SLL for 5 years and is in his second season with the Blues.  He has enthusiasm in abundance and his long term committment has been recognised by this award.  Alex has chosen the laptop computer from the wish list.

WINNER FOR DECEMBER 2008
Jordan Hodge

Jordan was nominated for all his help and support in refereeing Junior matches and overall committment to SLL.  Many children of his age would not willingly get up early on a Saturday morning to go and referee a game of football in all weathers.  If he is not refereeing he will be found cheering on his younger brother.  Jordan is supporting the purchase of banners advertising SLL and especially trials.

WINNER FOR NOVEMBER 2008
George Armitage
George has been nominated for his help in the Seniors League especially turning up to referee in all weathers.  George is helping to buy training equipment

WINNER FOR OCTOBER 2008
Amanda Deards

When Amanda first joined the Pumas she lacked in confidence and found it very hard to communicate with her team mates and management.  As she has perservered with her football she has been able to change her attitude for the better.  She is now a polite, funny, team player and is a delight to train and manage.  Amanda would also like to buy the Girls National Team Kit.

WINNER FOR SEPTEMBER 2008
Bradley Dixon
Darrin Love nominated Bradley for several reasons. Bradley played in the Senior league last season but had to miss a lot of matches due to injury. This season he has decided he would like to help train a team, and for the last few months he has been helping train the Rangers and the Falcons twice a week. He has put a lot of time and hard work in considering he is only 15. Bradley has chosen to buy some more training equipment.

WINNER FOR AUGUST 2008
Holly McGuiness

Holly (Cougars) maintains a brilliant, constant all round attitude towards her football, always comes with a smile and helps the younger players.  She is always polite and shows great sportsmanship every week.  Holly wishes to spend her money on training equipment and a bit towards the Girls National Team Kit.

WINNER FOR JULY 2008
Taylor Donaldson

Taylor is one of the smallest players on the Rover's team but he has been brave as a lion all season tackling players much bigger than him and trying his heart out week in and week out in training and in matches.  Taylor had to miss the Fun Day as he contracted pneumonia.  This has also affected him at school but in typical fashion Taylor has battled on and managed to sit his school SATs tests and came along to the Fun Day to cheer on his team mates.  Taylor has chosen to put his money towards a PA system.

WINNER FOR JUNE 2008
Chloe Bartram

Chloe was nominated not only for her fantastic performance this past season both during matches and in training, but especially for her team spirit on Fun Day.  The girls league play with new mixed up teams on Fun Day and when Chloe's new team, the Cuckoos, reached a penalty shoot out in the final no-one wanted to go in goal.  Chloe volunteered although she has never played in goal before and she managed to save 3 penalties.  She also scored the final penalty of the day, securing the Cuckoos the Fun Day Title.  She showed a very grown-up attitude for one so young. Chloe has chosen to buy some new shelving units and storgae boxes for the garage at Royston Park so that all our nice new things can be looked after.

WINNER FOR MAY 2008
Tommy Bowdery

Tommy has been nominated by Bernie Higgins, Albion Manager, for his role as captain of the Albion in the Inters league, he has kept his team smiling, kept team spirit up and has been an important part of a team that has stayed together and kept trying to the end of the season, in spite of their results.

WINNER FOR APRIL 2008
James Hall

James was nominated by Wayne Francis and Dave Gardner, The Tigers Management Team.  He has been part of the Tigers management team for the past two seasons taking over from Julie after she left. His younger brother plays for the team and he always brings him to training and to the matches every week for his mum. He also referees all the matches that the Tigers have to do, without any arguments with his fellow managers.  He has been very committed to the team, and even though he is still quite young he gets on very well with both the parents and the boys. Last year, he had to miss coming to training in the last part of season with a serious chest infection, but that still did not stop him coming down to encourage the team on Saturdays.  As his brother is moving up this year to the juniors, we might be losing him but hopefully he will stay on and help us out.

WINNER FOR MARCH 2008
Joe Harvey

Joe was nominated by the Cougars management team for his outstanding contribution to the Cougars coaching.  This he has managed whilst continuing to progress his own professional football career at the same time.  A great achievement for a lad of only 17.  Thanks Joe and congratulations.  Joe has chosen to buy some new nets and corner flags.

Bleu was nominated by Maria Valero for his great attendance and attitude despite some difficult personal circumstances.  Keep up the good work Bleu!  Bleu has chosen to buy a digital camera so that we can take some wonderful pictures of Sutton Little League (including all the Jack Petchey winners!)

Leader Award

I am delighted to announce that Frances Cooper is the inaugural winner of the Jack Petchey Leader Award.

Frances has been with Sutton Little League (SLL) for 7 years and despite being a single parent with two children, one who has special needs, she has always given so much of her own time.

In 2001 she started as Assistant Manager of the Wolves team, a boys team for children aged 6 – 8. The following year she took over as manager.

In 2004 she became Assistant Treasurer for SLL and took over as Treasurer in 2005 – a post she still holds today.

In 2004 Frances also took over the running of the very popular cafeteria which she did for 3 years.  This involved buying all the food/drink on a weekly basis and arranging volunteers to help with the cooking.

In 2006, with her daughter now also playing football, she volunteered to manage the Wolves Girls Team and was always running backwards and forwards between her team and the café.

With so much experience Frances was asked to become the Treasurer of the National Executive Committee in July 2006 and she still holds this position today.

Frances has also been one of the organisers of SLL’s Fun Day in 2006, 2007 and 2008.  These are very busy days full of football, fun and a big celebration to end the season.

In summary, I cannot think of any other person within SLL who could be more deserving of this award and am delighted that the Foundation agreed with me.
