Ernest is a normal guy, on the outside.Doing all the things a normal person does daily, going to work, washing, getting dressed. Underneith, normal goes out the window. He has a deep dark secret that he is not willing to share with anyone but himself. He has an obsession with baked beans! as the former employee of the month at 'BEANWORLD', he takes his work home with him, and as it seems....to bed with him. Nobody really knows how far his obsession goes, is it just a bit odd, or is it darkly erotic? more than likely. This film is a darkly funny and surreal drama That turns the word 'normal' upside down and makes sure you will never look at baked beans the same way again, if you can still stomach them that is.
SPECIAL EDITION DVD PLANNED FOR 2007 RELEASE! KEEP AN EYE OPEN!
Behind The Scenes
In
the fall of 2004, me and Matt were asked to make a short surreal film
based on what we had learned. this was for Film Studies at
college, so getting together our sickest Ideas we came up with a normal man with a bean obsession! simple as that.
We were on a strict 'no horror' guidline, and a limit of 5-6 mins. It
was rather annoying because everyone else did horror in some way,
and dressed it as surreal. Matt was fine, But I was bricking it because
I had never broken away from horror before, at least not successfully. As it all fell together we became aware that this was going to be something special.
Our first choice for Ernest was Dan, but the bean idea didnt mix with
him well, who can blame him? but In the end, I decided to take the role, as unflattering as it is. We had a bunch of scenes we had written, but as the time went in, we just didnt need them.
A couple of ideas that were floating about was a talking head in the
fridge and household objects that come to life to the song 'Brickhouse'. both the scenes read well but didnt suit the tone of the film, as it had become more darkly disturbing rather than comical.
we shot the movie in and around my home and the whole shoot took about
3 weeks. the hardest test was being covered in beans with no shirt on in a freezing cold conservatry. Editig
took a few days, but luckily I was used to it, after a 9 hour session
editing 'Friday the 13th:bloodline:trailer', it was no stranger to me.
it was much better having someone like Matt there though, good to have
some imput on the whole prosess. The editing looked good, and Matt had
some beautiful camera shots aswell, the whole movie was better than we
expected when it was finished. it got a great reception. Keep your fingers crossed for us as we could be in Line for an oscar this year!.
EDIT (20/07/05): Unfortunately because we were screwed over by a bunch of people who didnt know a good film from their own ass, we didnt get any awards for the film, Me and Matt are both pretty upset about this and really thought we had something special, no wait, we really thought SOME PEOPLE would find our film special enough to have a little something to show for it, but nevermind. probably the only time I will make a movie that is elegable for an award.......so thats that blown. What can you do? I hope you lot liked it, and thats what matters.

The Directors Cut
We made the movie for college and we had a strict 5-6 min time limit, and to be honest, as much as we liked it, we were still a little dissapointed. so we decided to produce a directors cut. basically I re-captured all the footage and re-edited the movie at home. The directors cut came in at about 10 mins. all of the shots are elongated and it has a slightly diffrent
soundtrack. we were very hot on the idea of having 'crosstown traffic'
as the ending song, and when we tested it, it worked pefect.unfortunatly
some people didnt agree, and we were forced to change it to '3rd stone
from the sun'. dont get me wrong I love the song, but
crosstown had more of a comic relief to it, and on the directors cut,
you can see for yourself. which song works better? you decide. I like both versions, but the directors cut has the edge.
