December 11, Eagles defeat Minnedosa 5-2 and take Top Spot in the NCHL

Minnedosa started the scoring at 5:20 in the first while on the power play.  A scramble in front of the Minnedosa net with 2:28 remaining in the first gave the Eagles their first of the night (Robby Memryk, from Jay Thiesen and Rob Eastcott). The Eagles second goal came at 5:56 in the second while Minnedosa was serving a penalty for kneeing. (Joel Ostash from Nathan Holovach and Jeff Chuchmuch).  Minnedosa tied it up at 8:16 in the 2nd. Ketih Spencer scored the Eagles 3rd goal with a nice shot from the point while on the power play again. The Eagles also got their 4th (Ostash, from Holovach & Chuchmuch) and 5th (Memryk from Thiesen & Joel Yanick) in the second period. Other than some tough hits and a few pushes and shoves, there wasn't much to report from the third period. The Bombers outshot the Eagles 34-25, so good work on the part of Goaltender Dale Martin.

With the Oak Lake Icemen having all of their points up until yesterday taken away (see the Crossroads website for details), Shoal Lake was in third spot going into tonight's game against the Bombers, and with the win now takes over top spot in the NCHL with 15 points. There's still a lot of hockey left but what an improvement from last year! Way to go Eagles!

November 26, Eagles 9 Virden 1

The Eagles hosted Virden in their first regular season meeting of 08/09. Just 32 seconds into the game the Eagles got their first penalty. The Eagles got their first goal shorthanded at 7:55 in the first when Eagles goaltender Mark Yanick made a diving stick save which was picked up by Robby Memryk and put in the Oil Kings net by Jay Thiesen. The Eagleses also scored their 2nd (Joel Ostash from Jeff Chuchmuch & Jory Cochrane), 3rd (Memryk from Cody Cornwall & Mike Susinski), 4th (Brock Davies, from Memryk & Thiesen) and 5th  goals in the first period. The shots after the first were Eagles 19, Oil Kings 6.  In the second each team had 5 penalties and  the Eagles got their 6th (Nathan Holovach from Theisen & Memryk) and 7th (Joel Yanick from Susinski) goals. Shots after the 2nd were Virden 10, Eagles 35. In the third the Eagles had 2 penalties and 2goals (Thiesen, from Susinski & Cory Woywoda and Davies from Thiesen & Cochrane). With just 18 seconds remaining Virden produced their lone goal of the game  ruining the shut out for the Eagles.

November 22, Eagles 6 Kenton 4

The Eagles played their first game in two weeks and they got started on the right foot with a goal by Steve Gabriel just 2:49 into the first period with the assist to Jeff Chuchmuch. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead at 17:32 with a goal by Robbie Memryk (assists, Jay Thiesen and Carey Findlay). Kenton's Cam Hodgins replied with their first goal less than a minute later. The Eagles got back their 2 goal lead with with a goal by Joel Ostash, assisted by Chuchmuch and Cory Woywoda with 1:53 left in the first, and then turned it into a three goal lead just 10 seconds later when Brock Davies scored his first goal with the Eagles (assists, Memryk & Thiesen). Kenton got their second goal at 5:04 in the second when Shoal Lake tried to clear the puck out of their own end and it bounced off of the Kenton player and snuck past Eagles goaltender Dale Martin. The Eagles scored their 5th goal with 7:31 remaining in the second, Memryk from Davies and Thiesen, and Kenton replied with their third goal just over a minute later. The third period got pretty rough, and nothing very productive came out of the firs half of it. Kenton thought they got a goal, but the referee ruled no goal. Then a nice clean hit from Keith Spencer of the Eagles resulted in a bit of a confrontation and Robbie Memryk being tackled by a Kenton player who was penalized with 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting & a game misconduct. Kenton scored their 4th goal while each team was serving a penalty with 3:42 to go in the game.  Kenton pulled their goalie and Memryk got an empty netter for the Eagles with just 6 seconds left, securing the win.

November 8, Reston 6 Eagles 5

The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season on the road in Reston.  A scramble in front of the Eagles net at 4:16 gave Reston the first goal of the game.  Rob Eastcott replied for the Eagles at the 9 minute mark with assists to Robby Memryk and Jay Thiesen.  At 10:04 Reston scored their second goal, which put them up 2-1.  A reston penalty gave the Eagles a few good scoring opportunities, and Nathan Holovach managed to get one past the Reston goaltender, with the assists credited to Joel Ostash and Jory Cochrane.  Reston scored their 3rd goal at 16:51, and the first period ended with Reston leading the Eagles 3-2.  The second period was full of penalties for Reston, with two coincidental penalties for the Eagles as well.  Holovach scored for the Eagles with assists to Steve Gabriel and Cory Woywada with 3:24 remaining in the second.  The second period ended tied 3-3 with Reston having 4 players in the penalty box to start the 3rd.  The Eagles scored at 1:16 into the third while on the power play when the puck just trickled into the net past the Reston goaltender. The goal was credited to Eastcott and this gave the Eagles their first lead of the game.  Reston replied with a goal, and then they received a penalty, which gave the Eagles the power play.  A powerful shot by Spencer (assists from Holovach and Gabriel) from the point blew past the Reston goaltender, and this put the Eagles ahead of the Rockets again.  Reston evened up the score less than 20 seconds later.  Spencer and Holovach both had excellent scoring opportunities for the Eagles, and Mark Yanick made some great saves in goal for the Eagles on a scrambley play.  Reston scored a shorthanded goal to give them a one goal lead over the Eagles with 2:42 remaining in the game.  With only 52 seconds left in the game Reston received a penalty, the Eagles called their time out and pulled the goalie.  With only 22.5 seconds remaining Reston won the faceoff and the Eagles' Keith Spencer made a diving save to keep the puck out of the empty Eagles' goal.  And that's how it ended with the Eagles trailing Reston 6-5.

November 5, Eagles 7 Minnedosa 2

The Eagles hosted the Minnedosa Bombers for their first game of the 08/09 season. There was a decent crowd out for the game.  57 seconds into the game and Minnedosa received their first penalty, which led to the Eagles first goal of the game scored by Jay Thiesen, and the assist to the newest addition to the Eagles' roster Keith Spencer.  The Eagles second goal came after a shot from Steve Gabriel was stopped and the rebound put in by Joel Ostash.  Before the first period was half way through Ostash scored again for the Eagles, this time assisted by Carey Findlay, making the score 3-0 for the Eagles. Jory Cochrane scored for the Eagles while on the power play with assists credited to Findlay and Ostash.  The shots after the first period were Eagles 12 and Bombers 9.  Minnedosa scored their first goal of the game 7:21 into the second while on a power play, while the Eagles' Robby Memryk was serving a penalty for Elbowing.  Less than 2 minutes later Memryk got his revenge on his former team by scoring the Eagles 5th goal with assists from Thiesen and Spencer.  The Bombers outshot the Eagles 13-7 in the second period.  The third period began with Memryk scoring again for the Eagles, which put the Eagles up 6-1.  2:04 into the period the ref made a good call and gave Minnedosa's Ryan Galbraith 2 minutes for instigating, 5minutes for fighting and a game misconduct in his "fight" with...well no one really because the Eagles' Jay Thiesen only got 2 minutes for roughing.  This gave the Eagles another power play and Rob Eastcott managed to capitalize on it, with help form Joel Yanick and Findlay.  Minnedosa scored once more with less than 4 minutes remaining.  The Eagles claimed victory over the Bombers with a score of 7-2.

My notes from the game:

If I have my information correct the second period of the game, would be the first time this season that the Eagles have been trailing their opposition in shots at the end of a period this year.

The shots at the end of the game were Eagles 37- Bombers 36.

Keith Spencer got two assists in his first game as an Eagle, welcome to the team and to Shoal Lake.

The Eagles remain UNDEFEATED this season! Keep up the good work guys.

That's how I saw the game, see you at the rink! ~kt

November 1, Eagles defeat Virden 6-3

The Eagles played their final game of the pre-season on the road. The first goal of the game went to Virden about 8 minutes in. The Eagles Jay Thiesen replied less than a minute later, with an assist from Rob Eastcott. About two minutes later Virden got their first of many penalties to come.  Virden caught the Eagles defence in a bad position and scored their second of the game at 13:15.  The Eagles' second goal came with 4:49 remaining in the first period scored again by Thiesen and assisted by Eastcott.  So the first period would end tied at 2, with the Eagles outshooting the Oil Kings 18-11.  33 seconds into the second period Carey Findlay of the Eagles received a penalty for slashing. The Eagles' third goal, and it was a pretty one, came when Thiesen and Robbie Memryk, flew past the Virden defence and had no one between them and the goal tender. Thiesen had the goalie ready to stop his shot, and made a great pass to Memryk at the last second and Memryk chipped it past the Oil Kings' netminder who never really had a chance.  This put the Eagles up by one.  6 penalties occured in the following 8 minutes of the game, both teams switched their goal tenders and the Eagles were given a 5 on 3 and could not capitalize on it. With one Oil Kings player still in the box, Jory Cochrane scored the Eagles fourth goal with assists to Memryk and Eastcott.  The 2nd period finished up with 4 more penalties and the Eagles leading the Oil Kings 4-2 in goals and 32-16 in shots. The third period began with 11 penalties, 8 of them for the Oil Kings including an ejection from the game for one of their coaches.  Steve Gabriel scored the Eagles' fifth goal of the game at 10:04 with an assist from Findlay. The Eagles got two penalties and Virden had one in the next 5 minutes. With 3:52 left in the game their was quite a mess in front of the Eagles' goal and Virden got a power play goal to bring them within 2 goals.  Memryk with an assist from Joel Yanick got the sixth goal for the Eagles while on a power play, while Virden was serving yet another penalty. And to finish out the game, the Eagles' received a penalty with 30 seconds left.  This penalty filled game ended with the Eagles defeating Virden 6-3 in goals and 50-19 in shots.

Highlights of the game from my point of view:

The Thiesen, Eastcott, Memryk line played a spectacular game. These guys are full of speed and created a pile of excellent scoring chances for the Eagles.  Keep up the hard work guys, those shots that hit the crossbar, or just missed the net, will turn into goals yet.

The team did an excellent job of keeping their cool and staying out of any scrappy situations. The guys put up with a lot of abuse from the oppostion, but controlled their tempers and the game in general, and that clearly showed on the scoreboard.  Also good job to the team keeping the pace of the game up where they should be playing and not slowing down, despite the Oil Kings trying to bring down the tempo of the game.

An excellent showing by the Eagles fans at this game as well, I counted 17, but it sounded like a lot more. When the Eagles scored some may have thought it was the home team...but the Eagles fans certainly had something to cheer about; the Eagles end their pre-season play UNDEFEATED!

Well that's how I saw the game.  See you at the rink! ~kt

October 29, Eagles defeat Kenton Cougars 5-2

Only a small crowd made it out on short notice for the Eagles exhibition game against Kenton.  The game didn't start out with a lot of scoring opportunities but the penalties started at 1:28 in the first, with Rob Eastcott being called for interference.  Joel Ostash got the first point on the board for the Eagles on just the second shot of the night.   On the third shot for the Eagles  Ostash counted his second goal with Joel Yanick and Nathan Holovach helping out.  Kenton got in behind the Eagles defense and scored their first goal of the game at 3:31 in the second period. The Eagles' Cody Cornwall replied with a power play goal.  At 11:50 into the second the Eagles' Jay Thiesen got away from the Kenton players and had a great scoring chance on the breakaway, the ref ruled no goal, so the play continued with a face off in the Kenton end. About a minute later, Robby Memryk of the Eagles and Ryan Carter of Kenton were roughing each other up a bit and Memryk ended up with a facial injury so Joel Yanick of the Eagles stepped in.  This resulted in Carter and Yanick being ejected from the game and Memryk serving two for roughing.  The Eagles' fourth goal of the game was scored by Jory Cochrane at 1:37 in the third with the assist to Rob Eastcott.  At 8:30 in the third Thiesen made a nice pass over to Eastocott who one timed the puck past the Cougar's goal tender.  Eagles goaltender Mark Yanick made 19 saves to help the Eagles in their 5-2 victory over the Cougars.

October 24, Eagles vs Virden Oil Kings

The Eagles came out strong being the first team to register a shot on the board, and continued to dominate the play for most of the first period.  After 20 minutes there was no score and only a couple of penalties on the sheet.  The Eagles played a great first period, and made the Oil Kings work hard to keep them from scoring.  In the second period Virden came out a little stronger and seemed to be getting frustrated, which resulted in a few more penalties for them then the Eagles.  Even though the Eagles had a few penalties, they managed to maintain their cool, and for the most part stay out of the penalty box against the more aggressive Virden team. Eagles defence man Cory Woywada dropped the gloves with Kyley Summerville of Virden, which resulted in a 5 minute penalty and a game misconduct a piece and an extra 2 minutes for Virden for roughing.  After  40 minutes the score was still 0-0 and it was looking like we might have a chance to see a shoot-out, which the league has decided will be played after 5 minutes of 4 on 4 overtime this season.  The Eagles came out strong again in the third and Virden still battled hard against them, but was certainly starting to look a bit tired.  A little past the halfway point of the third the Eagles' Ryan Nesbitt scored a beauty of a goal, with help from Robby Memryk and Joel Yanick.  This left the Eagles with a 1-0 lead. Even after Virden pulled their netminder for the last two minutes of the game and the play being mostly in the Eagles' defensive zone, some great play from Eagles' goaltender Dale Martin, kept the score that way till the end of the game.  Great work team!

2008 Eagles AGM

On Tuesday October 21, 2008 the Eagles held their first Annual General Meeting at the Shoal Lake Communi-plex.  The first exhibition game of the 08/09 season will be this Friday night at the Communi-plex.  The executive was elected, however mostly unchanged from last year's, the coaching staff is returning and the players are a combination of new and returning. The coaching staff and executive are looking forward to a new and exciting season of Eagles hockey.  The NCHL has decided that this year the home teams will wear dark jerseys so all of the Eagles fans will be cheering for a different color this year.  Let's  get out and show the Eagles as much support as last year and cheer them on in a new season!  See you at the rink!
