AXIS VEIN FIRST REVIEW
Dan Schaffer has posted his thoughts on Susan's upcoming solo album Axis Vein on his LiveJournal. It's worth a look, if only because it's one of the most beautifully written reviews we've ever read.
'Susan's soundscapes touch on something close to a common nightmare. They begin beneath the surface of domestic ordinariness and descend into sorrow, distrust, madness, and abstraction. It's at the bottom of this pit, where she scrapes her fingertips seductively against the edges of the unknown, that her style becomes stunningly unique'
Dan's Live Journal is here
Issue 18 of Wonderful Wooden Reasons includes a short but very sweet review of The Silent Architect.

Dan Schaffer was the first to mention Homothetique Ricochet in his LiveJournal way back in September. This is what he had to say:
I heard the Rainier collaboration last week and it's fantastic. Rainier coerces Susan's music and vocal samples towards a more European, sometimes jazzier sound, but without losing the intense personal nature of her work. While some of these mixes embellish her sound with a more extravagant style, others are sparse and get even closer to the bone, the different angle tapping a new vein and taking us deeper into Susan's intimate psychological soundscape, and closer to Susan herself (or the projected idea of what she represents within the music). For any collaboration, you've got to admit that's pretty remarkable.
Track Listing:
Introduction de la Performance
Un Silence Dysfonctionnel
Pas Encore la Verite
Passionee de Vous (edit)
Un Silence Dysfonctionnel (a/capella)
Passionee de Vous
Un Silence Dysfonctionnel (Instrumental)

Susan's 40 minute exclusive radio mix is scheduled for broadcast on April 11th 2008. Created in March 2008 DreamScapes will feature new material, rare tracks, an unreleased remix and one or two selections from Susan's back catalogue. The mix will be aired during the Garden Of Earthly Delights radio show and will also be released on CDR soon after the broadcast. More details soon.

THE SILENT ARCHITECT - REVIEWED?
Check out the reviews section for a rather unusual 'review' of The Silent Architect by Fatea
Although there are arguably folk elements to Susan's work, Fatea generally concerns itself with the more traditional proponents of the genre. It was something of a surprise then, when just prior to Christmas they contacted Siren Wire requesting a review copy of '...Architect'
We weren't sure what they'd make of it and well.... judging by the 'review', they still aren't sure themselves...

LISTS
Susan's work has fared well in a number of end of year lists:
Noise Is A Friend (www.myspace.com/noiseisafriend) voted 'Hope-Bound' and 'The Silent Architect' 8th and 9th respectively in his top 30 albums of 2007.
He writes:
More dazzling abstractions of grace and beauty, these songs just floor me. Susan has the incredible gift of being able to convey very private emotions through song-forms that shouldn't work at first glance. Yet she pulls this trick time and again. Think early-His Name Is Alive, but further adrift, and way better than any description I can muster. If 4AD ever got good again, Susan would be perfect for them.
'Lost Sorrows' and 'Silent Variations' are placed at a very encouraging 3rd and 4th in his top 30 singles of 2007.
Paul Lloyd contributing editor to Igloo Magazine recently voted 'Hope-Bound' and 'The Silent Architect' right at the top of his top ten of 2007 list for the mag (www.igloomag.com)
Finally Hydragenic (www.hydragenic.com) included 'Hope-Bound' in his recent Favourite Music Of 2007 - Sounds Of Silver Blog.
He writes:
...with every listen I realise that I've barely scratched the surface of these fractured, mesmerising, enigmatic and fascinating pieces of music....Hope-Bound is one of the most sophisticated expositions of her compelling musical world-view to date.
READER'S DIGEST VOL.2

LOST SORROWS - JUDAS KISS REVIEW
'This is beautiful sad and pained music that has real feeling and depth to it...a startling emotional and beautiful audio ride'
Roger Batty has reviewed 'Lost Sorrows' for Judas Kiss Magazine. Check our reviews section for a larger extract.
THE SILENT ARCHITECT and SILENT VARIATIONS RELEASE DATE
Susan's brand new solo album 'The Silent Architect' and it's companion EP 'Silent Variations' is set for release on 6th December 2007. Both releases are available for order from this website (please visit the BUY CDs link on the left)
The Silent Architect sees Susan once again moving into new sonic territory with an emphasis on field recordings and sparser arrangements. A number of tracks feature vocals by French multi-media artist Hoel Le Quenven and the album will include two songs based on poems written by Alexander Booth.
'HOPE-BOUND' REVIEW AT HEATHEN HARVEST
Part story teller and part confessional her music reaches into you and tugs at the heartstrings… Each piece of music drags you into her realms of fantasy and reality in ways that my words can’t do full or adequate justice to...Susan is undoubtedly without equal currently within her musical sphere... Alan Milne

Many thanks to Shane Quentin (aka Head Gardener) for the wonderful 40 minute live mix of Susan's work on last nights (Nov 30th) show.

After the show Susan spoke with Shane about the possibility of making the Mix available to those who missed the broadcast. The pair are hopeful that, after a little ironing out of one or two technical glitches, the recording will be available in MP3 format in the near future.

FIRST MENTION FOR 'HOMOTHETIQUE RICOCHET'
Dan Schaffer was the first to mention Susan's upcoming collaboration with Rainier Lericolais, on his LiveJournal way back in September.
The collaboration will be released on CD early in 2008.

'Botanical Rite No.1' is included on the recently released '50bpm or Less' CD on Canned Beef Records. The compilation has been reviewed by Mark Meloche who had this to say about Susan's contribution...
'The closing track is something to marvel at, done by Susan Matthews' it's a beautiful piano piece that soon has soft scratching sounds fading into the background. Ever listen to Eno's "Music For Airports"? It's right up there. An excellent closing track and one of my favourite I've heard in a while, from anyone'

'Caged Dream'performance in Munich
'Caged Dream' a work for zither and voice, will be performed at this years A•Devantgarde festival on Friday 15th June 21:00, at the Königsplatz München und Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Munich, Germany
The piece was created for New York based Vox Novus as part of their '60x60' project, featuring works on the theme of oppression and totalitarianism.
Here's a little info about the location and A-Devantgarde courtesy of Rob Voisey from Vox Novus:
Thematically and spatially, the ninth A•Devantgarde Festival
tackles the Munich landmark Königsplatz. As so many in Germany, the place has
an ambivalent history. Planned by Louis I. as a representative square
revitalizing antiquity, Königsplatz was exploited by the national-socialists
as an impressive backdrop for their ostentatious staging of the
dictatorship.
Artistic director: Moritz Eggert
Artistic team: Helga Pogatscher, Markus Muench, Markus Schmitt, Bernhard
Weidner
What is A•Devantgarde
In June 2007, the A•Devantgarde Festival for New Music returns for the ninth
time, inviting audiences to explore the Munich landmark Königsplatz and its
surroundings. The festival calls for the discovery of the new, the unheard
and the unusual.
Call for Curiosity
In the late 1980s, a group of young composers founded the music festival
A•Devantgardeto break up the entrenched music business and to provide
emerging composers with a platform for their work. Since the beginning, the
festival did not see itself as a school endorsing or even demanding a
certain style, but as an open forum for young composers. A•Devantgarde has
always been characterized by its quest to cross borders, by its curiosity
and its aesthetic diversity: it has become the place to hear new works by
young composers from around the world, and to experience experimental
concerts that incorporate other art forms such as painting, video and
performance art. The festival questions long-established practices to find
and establish a new audience for contemporary music.
Perspectives
Regardless of limited public funding, A•Devantgarde has continuously grown
over the last years. The festival has welcomed many international composers
and ensembles. In 2003, it has added to its program a big opera production
as well as a music theatre piece for children. Guest performances and
co-productions made the festival known beyond city limits. All this would
not have been possible without the generous support from our sponsors and
partners. This year, the ninth A•Devantgarde Festival enters new territory
conquering the public space and concentrating more than ever on
theatricality.

'Where Birds Come To Die'
French WebLabel Le Colibri Necrophile have completed 'Tribute To Necktar, Necktar VII' a compilation featuring 171 tracks on the themes of birth, transformation and death. All downloadable free of charge here
Susan's contribution is track 92 'Where Birds Come To Die'
'Three years in a northern city. A bleakness, an industrial desolation, an undercurrent of intense sadness. The vandalism, the factories, the chimneys, the rain and wind. I hear no birds, nature is receeding, forced to the periphery. A destructiveness that builds in tension but is ultimately unresolved - not a sudden death - it is fast but faltering, hesitant and impotent.'

The follow up to 2005s intense and haunting SirenWire69 sees Matthews further develop her unusual musical sensibilities. The equally effective and engaging Bruiser is in some ways a more startling accomplishment than its predeccessor with new instruments and musical styles added to the experimental mix.
From the out and out industrial barrage of Hushed Corrosive, to the sinister undertow of Lifelore, this cd winds its way through the medieval-esque folk recorders of Fortune, insistent rhythmic guitars of Flinch, hypnotic piano of Ellipse-Dream and the gentle beauty of Summers Over, all bookended by the fragile sadness of Mbox and Mbox 2
Bruiser is an impressively diverse collection of musical experimentations. A starkly personal exploration that challenges you to uncover its secrets over multiple listens.
Its hardly surprising then that 2006 has proven to be a hugely significant year for Matthews. Her work has been showcased in galleries and festivals throughout Europe, America and Asia. She has received radio airplay in over 70 countries, has collaborated with poets and film-makers and contributed to a variety of compilations.
Bruiser promises to not just build on these considerable acheivements but leave its own indellible mark...
