Short Mountain, TN
Short Mountain is a bouldering oasis a short drive outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Jon Phillips moved to Nashville last year from Gadsden. Shortly after his arrival in Nashville, Jon met up with Ben Salser and Daniel Worley. Ben introduced Jon to Short Mountain, and the two of them kept telling me to come check it out. I have put in my time at many of the less traveled spots here in the Gadsden area, so I can appreciate what they have to offer. I finally traveled to Nashville to see what the deal was with Short Mountain. We left Ben's apartment and the trio raved about how much I was going to like this place the whole way there. I was taken by surprise. The area is similar to the Shades Crest boulderfields of Birmingham,AL in size. There are about a hundred established problems, with potential for many more. They recently discovered a new boulderfield on the opposite side of the mountain. They say this area will host as many, if not more problems than the developed side. NEW AREA=NEW PROJECTS! The problems range from V0 to V8, but there's potential for harder stuff. This is what Ben had to say'
"We have traveled to and sent hard at HP40, Rocktown, Lilly Boulders, Sandrock, Mushroom Boulders, Shades Crest Boulderfields, and some of you have even taken us to your 'secret' areas here in the mighty ol' South. We want to give back. We want people to come check out what we have to offer. Short Mtn. has about a hundred problems from V0 to V8, and there are scores of harder projects waiting to go down. We want to hear from everyone, from the little men to the STRONG men. We have something for everyone. We are all about climbing... and pushing our limits, so come check it out. We're waiting to hear from you." Ben and the Dungeon Crew
Ben had shoulder surgery recently, so he won't be climbing for awhile. That will not stop him from showing you the best in Southern climbing hospitality though. Call Ben at (615) 594-5228 for more info or directions. |

Squeezin 4 a Reason is the first thing that cathes your eye on the back of the Gotta Problem Boulder. It's a blunt arete with some big spans between the holds. Fun stuff.

Daniel Worley making the third ascent of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. This problem is on the downhill side of the Dungeon Boulder.

One Hitter is a strange dyno at Short Mountain. It doesn't appear to be that hard, and then you look up from your crashpad wondering what went wrong. Jon Phillips got the first ascent. This is a shot of Jon trying to stick it left-handed.

Daniel Worley flashing Pad Service. Pad Service is on the Tranquiliem Boulder, on the east side of Short Mountain.
