| HP 40 Information |
There are a lot of places to find more information on Horse Pens 40. Check their website here for directions, rates, history, and general information. The Schultz family will be happy to help answer any questions you have, or set you up with camping reservations. They have an incredibly good cook at the cafe. Be sure to thank her before you leave. They serve a variety of different foods and all are good. The food is served hot and fresh. The service is first class and will not disappoint you. The store is full service with chalk and other necessities. You might even be able to grab a T-shirt left over from a previous bouldering comp (Mortal Kombat/ Triple Crown), if not they have a variety of their own design. They also provide the cleanest restrooms and bathing facilities anywhere in St. Claire County.
The ideal season for bouldering at HP 40 is fall, winter, and spring. The friction gets good when temps drop below 70 degrees. The lower the dewpoint, the better. The conditions are excellent when the temperature falls below 60. The leaves are also changing this time of year. This setting provides a nice distraction while you relax between burns on whatever classic you may be attempting.
Take a look at Modump for some more pictures and video footage from the Pens. Modump also has several southeastern regional links with articles and pictures. Dr. Topo has an excellent guide that can be downloaded for free here. |
